Re: Another Rumble

5.3-5.6 depending on which earthquake site you look at! Very unpleasant. One of our dogs had been barking most of the morning before it happened - he seems to "know" as well, as this has happened on previous occasions when there has been a large-ish "wobble".

Re: Greek driving licence renewal

Many thanks for that - just checking! Incidentally, if it helps anyone else: we were anxious about how long this process would take, so I checked with Budget at Gatwick whether they would accept the "interim" certificate provided by the Greek authorities. The answer was "no", but...

Re: Greek driving licence renewal

Given that we'd heard horror stories of it being much longer, yes!

Re: Greek driving licence renewal

Not renewal - application for first Greek licences made mid January, because our British ones both run out in July. We applied at the local licensing office and filled in all the relevant paperwork, as described above. Forms then sent to DVLA - answered within about 2 weeks. Our own lawyer did the t...

Re: Easter Saturday/Sunday Catholic cathedral, Chania

It is a pity that a simple informative post by Bob has been hijacked in order to promote religious intolerance. In stating this, I'm not being "intolerant". I'm merely suggesting that people should read all the available evidence and not simply one book. It is, likewise, sensible to read ...

Re: Start of the fire season already

Fires in the open are illegal from May 1st so expect a lot of burning during the next week. That is true in this area (Sitia) - I checked with the local fire brigade a couple of weeks ago. However, all areas are NOT the same, so checking with YOUR local brigade is the only way to be sure - each yea...

Re: EU Petition

We've certainly had forms in good time before the last 2 General elections, so there is hope! I would have thought that 4 days in advance was optimistic even for some parts of the UK, given the efficiency (or not) of Royal Mail.

Not individual shops, but Xalkiadakis in Sitia now sells these products, so I imagine your local branch will as well.

Re: Ship furniture or buy locally?

Just as a side comment - we would wholeheartedly recommend Nomad. We used them to bring all our worldly goods here to Crete and the service was excellent.

Re: Referendum

As the result of the referendum could have an impact on those of us living here in Crete who have UK pensions I think it is perfectly reasonable to discuss here - the principle of the thing rather than the nitty gritty. I agree with Warwick, though, that the illogic of not allowing a vote for expats...

Re: white vinegar

As far as I know it isn't available here (apart, maybe, in "British" shops).

It depends what you want it for, of course, but wine vinegar works equally well in all scenarios, in my experience.
