Re: Peanuts

Just a thought. Have you asked Jayne at the British Shop in Ag Nik? She might just have them - if you were going there for other things anyway. There are also a couple of quite large pet shops in Ag Nik which are a possibility. If you go into the town on the "old" road, turn right at the l...

Re: ENFIA

I'm with you, Warwick. While I actually would be very concerned if my property tax quadrupled the principle you state is correct. Those at the bottom of the heap are always the ones on whom increases bear the hardest. The basics of shelter, water and food should not be subject to tax - ever, in my o...

Re: E-tickets for National Bank queues

However, the Piraeus bank in Sitia has a queueing system and it does work fairly well. The agricultural union has one too, thank goodness. The first few years we were here the annual registration of olive plots was a total nightmare, but nowadays it is pretty efficient - as long as you ask someone h...

Re: Hotel near University Hospital Iraklion

I know someone who stayed at the Lato Boutique Hotel while she was having chemo at the University Hospital and found it very good - should imagine it was relatively easy to get to/from as she stayed there several times.

Re: Tooway satellite broadband

Forthnet have a satellite service - no idea how good it is, but it was suggested to us a while ago - we are pretty remote as well.

Re: Recycling Blue Bins

Couldn't agree more about shopping bags. I'm still using my Sainsburys bags for life which I bought about 12 years ago - the big heavy duty ones. One of the staff at our local Ariadne supermarket commented on them a while ago. I explained that we now, in the UK, have to pay for bags - she thought th...

Re: Recycling Blue Bins

I gather there is a recycling plant at the "other" end, Mixos. We always separate out recycling stuff as well - being well trained Brits who, fortunately, left the UK before the dafter elements of the recycling mafia took over - the six different container scenario! Being realistic - I'm n...

Re: Electric Bill

I think this may be a "local" problem. We live in a pretty remote area, and there seems only to be one person who does the meter readings. Up until last year we had the ΕΝΑΝΤΙ bills alternated with the ΕΚΚΑΘΑΡΙΣΤΙΚΟΣ bills as you describe, but there have been periods when we have had two, ...

Re: Electric Bill

We are getting more estimated bills these days - the latest one, which arrived earlier this week, had the "bumf" about the discount on it.

Re: New Bank Accounts

We were told about the requirement to bring in a minimum of 10,000€ some time ago by the Bank of Xania. This corroborated the experience of Greek friends who are trying to set up a charity account - they can only do so with that amount transferred in from outside Greece.

Thanks for that update, Warwick. Still as clear as mud, though, regarding what payments are eligible. I guess we will just have to wait and see!

Re: Start Collecting Card Receipts

Does anyone know if this has actually come into effect?

If so - is there any change in the categories of purchase acceptable - ie can phone/electricity/water payments be used?

Re: bank account after brexit

All true, but we had a conversation a little while ago in the bank of Xania, as their interest rates are much better than the bigger banks - because of their different set up, as described up thread. Apparently you can open an account with at least €10,000 brought in from abroad - the amount and the...
