Forthnet

Hurrah - finally we have ADSL again, and now with 2mbs speed. This is 2 weeks since I got the first text message confirming that our 2play application was under way, and also 2 weeks we've been without ADSL. We'd been told several times (by Forthnet) that OTE was causing the problem - can't tell, of...

Thanks, Paul. Yes, we're in the east, in Sitia. I've just been into the shop, and the man in there spoke to the technical people, who will ring us this afternoon. We'll see what that generates - I've already had one long session with them, and changed modem drivers to see if that would work, and cha...

ADSL connection (again)

We've now been without an ADSL connection for 12 days. I've read all that has been said about upgrading, which makes perfect sense. However, this seems to be a long time to have no connection whatever. Forthnet are saying that the problem lies with OTE - our modem is fine, and the lights are on, so ...

Healthcare costs - was re: winter fuel payments

"....but we still keep the majority of our NHS benefits". Explain this, please. Despite still paying NI (to make sure that I get a pension) I am l unable to claim any NHS benefits to set against healthcare costs here in Crete, and have to pay for private insurance as I'm not working. Admit...

Definitely some upgrade going on. My local ADSL speed has been abysmal for 5 days now. Response time to the first stop (generally athe10ke-l1.otenet.net) is between 500 and 2000ms. Remember how bad it was when OTE decided to upgrade everybody from 384 to 768 Kbps? We've had no ADSL at all for more ...

Re: Cubic Metres/Cubic Feet

Can someone confirm for me that a cubic metre is 100cm x 100cm x 100cm (or is it 10x10x10) and that it is almost 3 times bigger than a cubic foot. I think I was daydreaming when we did this at school or I got as confused then as I am now!! I've had a few removal quotes in the past few months and so...

I'm 99% certain it is part of an OTEnet upgrading. ( just haven't seen it in writing yet) The 768 speed is being discontinued and lowest now (or soon will be) is 1024. People on 768 are being automatically upgraded to 1024. Though it is OTE upgrading the exchange equipment it affects all ISP's as h...

During the last two days I've had very little problem, only disconnected once yesterday although it took three or four attempts this morning to connect, so far today no more problems. Having said all that I've been busy elsewhere, might be a different story if I was using the system more. We can't ...

Google now has a translation tool http://www.google.co.uk/language_tools?hl=en that seems to work a lot better than Babel. I'm still not sure I would trust it for English to Greek for anything important. Use it together with http://www.magenta.gr/en/lexicons/en_en_dictionary.htm and it can be quite...

Thanks for making that clear - I had a horrible feeling that that might be the sub-text. No doubt we will find out more in due course.

My only concern with putting food in our hold luggage is if it manages to go missing and we end up with mouldy, smelly food when we finally get our bags back!! So far we've only had my case go missing once when we came back from Crete one year so it might not happen... There is always that chance, ...

Just had another power cut here tonight.. Don't know about the main DEH office - obviously it was closed today along with everything else - I'd hazard a guess that it will be open tomorrow, but that's not a definite response. Banks are on strike again tomorrow. Eurobank in Sitia was open this morni...

Put whatever you are bringing in the freezer right up to the point when you depart for the airport. Then wrap it in a few layers of newspaper and put it in your hold baggage. OK it won't stay completely frozen but it will stay cold enough that it won't go off. I think it's helped by the fact that t...
