Re: New House Purchase

Thankfully our solicitor is the SIL of our good Greek friend, his other friend is an engineer and did the survey and we have our tax numbers etc all sorted I think! If you rent out legally you need a lot more than that. Just getting a licence before doing anything else can be a nightmare. Maybe I'm...

Re: New House Purchase

I'd suggest you contact the EOT office in Heraklion for info about the available schemes and a good accountant. We have friends who had a very successful holiday villa once they had spent about 2-3 years satisfying the EOT requirements that seemed to change on a monthly basis. 100% occupancy from th...

Re: Flights December - January

In previous winters we’ve stopped in Athens for a night one way and timed flights so connection time isn’t too long or short the other way. The Sofitel at the airport is a good place to while away time out of the airport building. I understand your reasoning re-school time travel and I'd probably a...

Re: Typical EU

Dijsselbloem must be the biggest hypocrite of all time. He was one of the loudest cheerleaders for the troika's "solution" to Greece's debt problems and had many fingers in many pies that would be affected one way or another depending on the format of the so called bailout. He was head and...

Re: New House Purchase

Sorry but I can't help with shops in Iraklio area but a couple of questions. The intention is to rent the property through the summer months and also use for ourselves. Are you aware of the different types of letting that are allowed? Have you been through the registration process for whatever type ...

Re: Flights December - January

As I said, I'd rather break the journey with an overnight stay than extend the continuous travel time, not that I'm ever likely to go to Edinburgh, especially in winter. Last time we went from here to LHR we had almost to run to change in ATH - 40mins to transfer - struck lucky at LHR with our bags ...

Re: Flights December - January

It's difficult to do it in much less outside direct flight season, Filippos. I'd welcome even a couple of hours less or plan CHQ/ATH/LHR, overnight in hotel, then head for EDI next day, not that I'm ever likely to make that journey Summer or Winter. I can't think of many things more knackering than...

Re: Flights December - January

Seems a decent price to me. It's not the price but the hours of travelling that would deter me. Thankfully, if I needed to go to the UK I wouldn't need to go to Edinburgh but only as far as Bristol. Out of season, I'd say bugger the cost and go Xania/Athens/Heathrow. Hopefully, I won't ever need to...

Re: Flights December - January

What's the travel time, start to finish in each direction? For me? Yes, thanks. Wouldn't do for me. Despite being healthy and fairly fit for my age I'd flake out and need min. 24 hrs recovery, especially on the outbound journey. Assuming my calculations are right, allowing for the 2hrs time differe...

Good luck with getting people to watch it, Warwick, let alone understand it for what it is. Well I watched it and think he's an excellent presenter but maybe that's because I understand the exponential function. Many years ago I worked in financial services and would have made a few pounds if I'd r...

Re: Draining the pool over winter or keep it going?

Horses for courses, I guess. For the first three years, '99-'01, our house was on holiday rental and in '04 we built a holiday apartment. We'd expected lack of a pool to be a negative but were surprised by the number of visitors who said not having a pool was one of their reasons for choosing our pl...

Re: Draining the pool over winter or keep it going?

This thread has reinforced my belief that a pool is more an encumbrance than a pleasure. When we bought our first house here in '98 we decided no pool and cost wasn't a factor. I came here to enjoy a relaxed lifestyle and that didn't equate to being a part-time pool maintenance man or having to deci...
