Re: A Thought for the Day

Good luck with getting people to watch it, Warwick, let alone understand it for what it is. Well I watched it and think he's an excellent presenter but maybe that's because I understand the exponential function. Many years ago I worked in financial services and would have made a few pounds if I'd r...

Re: Draining the pool over winter or keep it going?

Horses for courses, I guess. For the first three years, '99-'01, our house was on holiday rental and in '04 we built a holiday apartment. We'd expected lack of a pool to be a negative but were surprised by the number of visitors who said not having a pool was one of their reasons for choosing our pl...

Re: Draining the pool over winter or keep it going?

This thread has reinforced my belief that a pool is more an encumbrance than a pleasure. When we bought our first house here in '98 we decided no pool and cost wasn't a factor. I came here to enjoy a relaxed lifestyle and that didn't equate to being a part-time pool maintenance man or having to deci...

Re: Do you know of a TV Repair Man?

Best place I can think of is Xania Electronics. I seem to have lost my contact details so no phone/e-mail but they're easy to find. Head into Xania on Souda Avenue and at the last traffic lights before police HQ (petrol station on far left corner) turn right. The road narrows tyhen widens out again ...

I've know David for several years and second Steve's recommendation wholeheartedly. Honest, reliable and will take good care of you things, I doubt you'll find anyone offering a better rate.

Re: EHIC card

Before I applied for my EHIC, issued by the DWP, I asked specifically whether it could be used in the UK. The slightly exasperated answer I received (phone, not written) was along the lines of, "Yes, that's the whole point but you do realise it can't be used in Greece."

Re: EHIC card

My card, as a UK pensioner in receipt of a pension, covers me for UK visits. If I remember rightly it was issued by the Pensions Service.

P.S. Memory in order. Just found the card and under "ID number of the institution" it shows "0001 - DWP"

Re: Hello

I dont think they really pester people, they just sit and look at you hopefully. Tell that to the party of eight tourists at the next table to me last Monday. A child aged about five was frightened when a cat (one of three round the table) clawed at her skirt; it wasn't being aggressive but trying ...

Re: Car hire deals for repeat trips

I've always rented from Kostas who owns Auto Club Crete (offices in Kalyves and Almyrida). Up to date vehicles, clean and sound and good prices. I've always found them cheaper than local alternatives, sometimes significantly so. Efficient service. When we had a holiday apartment here I used to rent ...

Re: Hello

... i really cant see any problem with doing that, even in restaurants... 1. Feeding cats in restaurants is inconsiderate to the many diners who either don't like cats per se or don't like cats pestering them around the table. 2. The cats inevitably leave some bits and scraps which attract vermin. ...
