Re: Earth tremor Sitia, 27.08.17

I also noticed in the article that most references to doorways implied internal ones, many of which are single-leaf brick, plasterboard faced stud work (or faced, light aluminium frame), none of which offer much resistance to collapse. On the other hand external doorways tend to have lintels of conc...

Re: Earth tremor Sitia, 27.08.17

'Er Indoors remembers that as quite scary but I didn't notice a thing. I was up an olive tree pruning when it struck and the tree was wafting about anyway without help from the ground being shaken.

Re: Rental Chania/Vamos

For long term rentals three local agents I'd suggest in Kalyves (approx 18Km East of Xania, 6 Km) South of Vamos, close to the National Highway) Alpha Omega http://www.aocrete.com/ Crete Island Estates http://www.crete-island.net/ Minoan Properties http://www.minoan-properties.com/ All three have a ...

Re: Exchange rates

Everything is relative in currency space. You are always comparing currency pairs and it is impossible to say if one currency is getting weaker or the other is getting stronger. A lot of analysts see the weakening £-€ exchange rate as being due more to a strengthening of the Euro. That's confirmed ...

Re: Forum Issues - tech help?

That problem may be resolved when the new owners have had some time to improve systems.

Re: Exchange rates

If you get rid of money altogether what do you replace it with? Some means of exchange will be needed.

If you're thinking of Freda's I believe she closed the kennels and returned to the UK some months ago.

Re: Top up mobile phones from bank account?

I am sure that if the SIM is left for a long period of time with no credit and no usage it will expire but I don't know how long that is. Many years ago now I had a SIM 'de-activated' by a UK company simply because the phone hadn't been used despite there being credit on it up to the deactivation d...

Re: Future (and current) British expats in Crete

I said, "Britons lived in continental Europe before the EU..." (with no mention of movement in t'other direction). Do you think that there hasn't been a two way movement? These are reciprocal agreements. Don't be silly. of course that's not what I was thinking. I was merely pointing out t...

Re: Future (and current) British expats in Crete

Decisions being made on emotion and guesswork. There's no indication one way or the other whether settling in Europe will be made more difficult. Britons lived in continental Europe before the EU was even dreamed of. Some people are pessimists, some panic and others consider decisions when there's e...

Re: Old Videos

There are several more videos dating from the early 60s on You Tube. They were uploaded by John Sooklaris who digitised his father's old 8mm films that were shot during visits home to Crete from the US where the family had settled. Sooklaris has uploaded 90+ videos many of which are more recent even...
