Hi Mary,

I see you downloaded my Kalyves and Almirida area guide. Many thanks and I hope you find it useful when you come over later in the year.

I imagine you're also finding Carol's Living in Crete book interesting as it's packed with useful information.

If the appliance, whatever it is has only two wires and no earth, it doesn't matter which way round you connect the plug (provided you don't connect one of the wires to the earth connection). Once the plug is closed you can't see the connections anyway and there's no external marking. Personally, I ...

We haven't had any problems using UK/continental type adaptors with various electrical items including 'phone chargers and other items with UK moulded plugs that I couldn't be bothered to change. We bought some very neat adaptors here with no trouble finding them. We bought the first couple from a "...

I would have thought that your Swedish bank would be able to deal with any recognised bank in Crete. We have transferred money from different banks in the UK to both the Nat...

In Hania we use Bank of Cyprus and have been very pleased with the service. There's a list of branches (and ATMs) here: http://www.bankofcyprus.gr/locations.asp?lCity=183&lCountry=0 There are pros and cons with all the banks. BoC has a good website with an English language version. In the branch...

Hi Mary, The nearest thing I've seen to prefab homes in Crete are "Procat" (the brand name). They're actually a steel framed structure for strength with walls using lightweight building blocks (Thermalite or similar). As you already own the land it may be a reasonable alternative building method for...

Holiday rental problems

The following are quotes from an article in today's Telegraph on line. "A fresh crackdown by ... tourism and tax authorities over unlicensed apartments and villas that are let to holidaymakers threatens to trap countless Britons," " .. few realise that they face swingeing fines of up to £20,000 (€30...

Who cares about exams, anyway. The important thing is being able to communicate. I've always found the local people here very patient, helpful and appreciative of the effort however badly I mangle their language. One phrase I've learned parrot fashion, which usually gets a laugh, is. "Εί&#...

Someone at the company should have spotted the possibility of misinterpretation. A hyphen or underscore in the appropriate place might have helped just like one of their imitators has done. I suppose, though, that if all you see and hear is "Pen Island" you just don't see the alternative. What you s...

And after you've learned Greek ... ... ... ... ... ... You have to learn Cretan. When we first lived here I was told by a neighbour, "Don't go to a language school, they will teach you the Greek they speak in Athens. You should learn in the kafeneio." And I'm still pretty useless having le...

It can be difficult to move re-sale properties but there are probably differences in different parts of the island. ur own property, in Apokoronas, is on the market now and has been since August 2006. Fortunately, we do not need to sell the property and are, therefore, not too concerned if it takes ...

The webmaster deletes several new "members" like this ever week, usually almost immediately. Unfortunately, she also works and can't spend every second watching the forum. There was another of these unpleasant people who registered earlier today and I see they've already been deleted. There's no way...
