The webmaster deletes several new "members" like this ever week, usually almost immediately. Unfortunately, she also works and can't spend every second watching the forum. There was another of these unpleasant people who registered earlier today and I see they've already been deleted. There's no way...

Margarita tells "porkies"; she's better than that.

Hi Page, Can't help with suggestions for rental property but you should be able to get something good for a lot less than €700/month (excluding utilities). Around us, opposite the base across Souda Bay, €300 - €400 is fairly common. That could increase a little before February '08. As for utility co...

And before you light it for the first time in autumn/winter check the top of the flue for birds' nests.

It's largely a question of having adequate heating of the right type and appropriate ventilation. As in other places insulation standards vary. Many holiday homes have been built for summer occupation so don't have any form of central heating. Some of the less scrupulous developers assure people the...

Identity theft

I wonder who has registered the user name Saravista. It certainly nobody connected with the Saravista who posts on certain other forums. A couple of times Sara used my computer to post and forgot to login so posts "signed" Sara appeared under my user name. I explained a couple of times that Saravist...

I'm not a fisherman so I haven't investigated this sort of situation but I've never seen organised fishing trips (we're in the west but it may be different around Malia). However, any fishing from a boat, however small, requires a licence and the authorities do check boats and often the catches for ...

the majority of posters here seem to be from the west of Crete. If anyone has any questions on the east end of the island, I'll be happy to help - if I can. John Good evening John. Perhaps we west enders dominate the forums because your lot (and potentials for your end) seem to ask the questions an...

Nice to see you here, Irish (and you, too Ros). Flattery will get you everything but I'm not the only one who posts what I hope is useful information. Warwick was at it long before me as was paulh amongst others. I won't be rejoining and posting on the other forum especially as the site owner, in po...

What's more the habit is catching. In the UK I hadn't chewed gum since I was about sixteen. So far as I know my wife never used the stuff. They stand more chance of banning cigarettes.

Imagine the energy needed to chew all that gum. Perhaps if they wired people's jaws to the electricity supply it could be used as a green renewable energy source.

PaulH, what a wonderful thought, basil in the evening air. The first time we visited Crete we stayed in a ground floor studio. We had to cross the "verandah" (more like a small English patio) to get in and out - which was impossible without brushing against a large, potted, small-leaf basil. We als...

will download your book before we leave - or can we buy it when we get there? Thank you. You should be able to buy it here but you may have to search a bit. Papyrus bookshop should have it but when they run out they sometimes don't re-order immediately. If you download you'll be certain to get it. ...

Basil is rarely used in Cretan cooking because, we've been told, of religious connotations. I'm not sure of the reasoning behind it but the plant is regarded as holy. It's certainly used in many religious ceremonies. Priests dip bunches of basil into holy water and use it to splash the water over pa...

You could do worse than Akti Galini. Their web site address is http://www.aktigalinis.com/apartments.htm My in-laws stayed there a couple of years ago and found it clean and comfortable. It's practically on the beach (about 30 metres), two minutes walk from bakery and 2 greengrocers and, maybe, five...
