I'm no expert either and you may be right on that Ken but there are other factors to take into account as well. There's a cost factor. If you have a PC a laptop with equivalent performance will be more expensive. If you need to add an extra hard drive on a laptop you'll need to buy an external one w...

Andy, I'm sure Carol will be right and sorry if I misled you (maybe regs have changed; maybe it was a senior moment). Despite age and memory loss, I know that I've read somewhere that the company is animal friendly. If not allowing dogs into cabins I'm pretty sure they have kennels and allow owners ...

Not sure about the Venice route but I've been told that Anek ferries from Ancona to Patra and Pireas to Crete are very "dog friendly", allowing dogs into cabins, etc. Unfortunately, so far as I know, Anek do not sail to/from Venice.

Lovely tale, John. Please make sure we hear the outcome of this somewhat unusual approach. It reminds me a little of our arranging house insurance when we first arrived here. The agent told us, "If you have a burglary and things are stolen you must first 'phone the police and get an incident number....

And it might be a good idea to agree to put the arrangement into the sales contract if either of you decides to sell so that future owners would then have to commit to paying their share of maintenance costs.

Please excuse my ignorance Filippos but what do you mean by old style houses? I thought rightly or wrongly that all homes built from 1962 had to meet earthquake regulations. Ken. I think you've misunderstood, Ken. With my comment about older style houses I was referring solely to the appearance. Th...

I forgot to mention that here in the USA our standard paper is 8.5 x 11 inches which is the equivalent to your A4 paper. That's slightly shorter and wider than A4 but isn't a problem. The Adobe Acrobat print dialogue has Page scaling options, two of which are, "Reduce to Printer Margins" and "Fit t...

Hi Freddie, If the show house you remember was on a hairpin bend just above Kalyves then it probably is the same one. The builder is Myridakis and they have a pretty comprehensive website. There are one or two places you may have to interpret the English. http://www.myridakis.gr/catalog.asp?lang=en&...

Hello New Guy. I think you'll be out of luck. There isn't an abundance of cheap vehicles in Crete. For some reason I can't explain used vehicles, even quite old ones, seem to hold their prices at pretty high levels compared with the rest of Europe. As for importing a vehicle it's pretty expensive fo...

Hi Brian, Welcome to the forum. I know very little about boats and live at the west end of the island so I'm probably not much help but have you tried going down to the harbour/marina at Agios Nikolaos or Elounda and asking around. For all I know there might even be a boatyard of some sort there or ...

Hi Mary,

I see you downloaded my Kalyves and Almirida area guide. Many thanks and I hope you find it useful when you come over later in the year.

I imagine you're also finding Carol's Living in Crete book interesting as it's packed with useful information.

If the appliance, whatever it is has only two wires and no earth, it doesn't matter which way round you connect the plug (provided you don't connect one of the wires to the earth connection). Once the plug is closed you can't see the connections anyway and there's no external marking. Personally, I ...

We haven't had any problems using UK/continental type adaptors with various electrical items including 'phone chargers and other items with UK moulded plugs that I couldn't be bothered to change. We bought some very neat adaptors here with no trouble finding them. We bought the first couple from a "...
