I don't know whether this is relevant but whenever I come to Crete my Nokia 'phone works fine with "roaming" on my Vodafone contract. And I bought a local SIM card in Paleochora, which worked fine (and much cheaper).

I'm just not used to finding my way around Macs though I am improving. MacOS and Windows differ in the everyday things - rather like English and American language. Common foods and household implements have completely different names! To determine which operating system your Mac is running, click o...

You obviously don't understand ---> ;) I stated quite clearly that my Greek is dreadful and I wasn't joking about that! but you are welcome to poke fun at it (and my attempts to write Greek words using the only characte...

I am also English already. I was born that way. ;)

I hope to move to the Xania' area eventually. Maybe we'll meet up one year. Then you can help me with my (dreadful) Greek!

(My boyfriend, who is English, already lives in Crete...)

I've actually come across a few so-called "web design specialists" who charged the earth for "flashy" sites (with or without flash). I learned about them from complaints from their customers because the web sites weren't doing the job - pulling in paying customers. In fairness, I...

Thanks, so the answer to my question is "yes" you need to set up a proxy server. OK, I'll make sure I do that before (if) we move. Sorry I didn't follow the iTunes question. "Having trouble" is too vague. Anyway, all you have to do is let Mac iTunes format the iPod's internal Dri...

KompoZer (web authoring) is looking promising:

Apparently Adobe PhotoShop 7 is not supported under "Leopard" but Pixelmator also looks like a reasonable alternative, And I like the price!

BBC programmes

Out of interest, can anyone (in Crete) watch the BBC programmes listed for the last 7 days here? http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer Works fine here in the UK but I wondered if you need to set up a "proxy" to view it in Crete? (Trying to plan ahead for my retirement. This is easier than installin...

latsida wrote:what do you mean downgrade? What classic apps do you use?

Well it's obviously a downgrade because Leopard doesn't support Classic apps. I use Claris Home Page, VSE web site turbo and a few other less critical apps. Today I upgraded to FilemakerPro 7 so that's a step in the right direction.

I had these symptoms and tracked it down to a neighbour using the same frequency. I changed my router to a channel at the opposite end of the band and the problem went away.

Well, I'm thinking about it but I never upgrade to a new OS until at least 6 months after its release. Let everyone else do the beta testing!

Also, I don't want to downgrade to "Leopard" right now because it doesn't support all the "Classic" apps that I still use.

Don't expect me to proof-read your greek. With seven (eight?) ways to write the "i" sound, it's a struggle! Kai theestikos milaw poli leega ellinika. :-(

(My written greek is awful and my spoken greek is even worse! Should that be a capital "G' for the language?)

The web site wouldn't let us book flights for next year. Each time we tried, it reverted to Feb 2007.

Yes, we are flying to Athens in February (from Manchester) and were warned against booking with Olympic by our friend in Athens. So we weighed up the alternatives and decided on a two-hop flight there with Swiss Airlines and a two-hop return with Lufthansa.

It's never straightforward out-of-season!
