Re: email and new router problem

Clearly, the problem lies with the new router settings. To see them, launch your web browser and type in the address, such as: http://192.168.1.1 and hit Enter. That address might be on the router's label and/or in the instruction leaflet. Then type in the Admin name (usually "admin") and ...

BBC and VPN

I just cancelled my contract with StrongVPN because they can no longer provide an IP address that works with BBC. They refused a refund. There are VPN providers that still work but I'm not going to name them here because I'm sure that the BBC has people trawling the Internet looking for such posts s...

I have an acquaintance near Triopetra who would like periodic deliveries of organic veg. Willing to pay. Maybe worth considering if you can't find a better cause.
Sorry, I don't know of an orphan's charity.

Re: One Drive on not-so-smart Samsung phone

You might also find Calibre useful. It is an app that works on Windows and mobile devices that allows you to organise a library of books and read them. You can use it on your PC and then load them onto a reader device such as kindle, android smart phone/tablet or iPhone/iPad. Just to avoid ambiguit...

Re: ANYBODY IN HERAKLION?

I thought that there were quite a few expats in and around Iraklio so I'm surprised that nobody has replied.
Unfortunately, most of the people whom I know are west of Rethymno.

Re: Homeless in Hania

I think there is an (possibly more than one) organisation that takes food out to the villages for people who are struggling but I don't have any details. The "Social Supermarket" (based in Vrises Town Hall) does this in Apokoronas district. Also there were a few cafés in Crete that ran a ...

mythos master wrote:due to lovely autumn weather haven't used heating since, so will wait and see

We test ours every Autumn before the cold weather sets in. Otherwise, if you wait till everyone else has discovered their heating isn't working, you could wait weeks for a plumber.

Re: Wasps still around

At dinner we set a separate plate on a corner of the table furthest from us (or on an adjacent surface) and place bones and unwanted gristle on it. The wasps prefer to swarm around that, rather than risking contact with humans. The only time I have been stung is while riding my little motorbike (twi...

Re: Key ring torch

And what do you call it in Greek? I'm not aware of a specific word or phrase but "meea led lampa kleetheeoo" should do it* or "ena fakos meekros kleetheeoo" as all keyfob torches nowadays employ an LED anyway. As above, most Euro shops and supermarkets have them on display, incl...

Re: Internet Problems

The router doesn't take much power so a <€100 UPS will keep it going for quite a long time if it is not powering anything else. A typical router takes about 1 Amp at 12 volts = 12 Watts. You can run it from a 12 volt alarm battery or from a car battery, with a suitable extension cable and plug. I m...

Just a heads-up: more lightning is forecast for Monday Nov 13th and Thursday. It might not happen but I recommend unplugging phone line, aerial, satellite dish and sensitive equipment before you leave home, just in case.

Re: oil fired heating

First you need to determine whether the boiler is lighting. If it isn't, then there's your answer. If it is then check that the pump is working. (If you need to ask "how?" then I refer you to Warwick's answer.) Our boiler wouldn't light a few years ago. A quick check determined that the oi...

As it's relevant to this discussion, I have a reel of genuine WF100 copper/copper coaxial cable if anyone needs some. It has the lowest loss of all the standard "100" type cables. It's way better than the steel-cored stuff sold in Greece. It can make the difference between picture and no p...

PS The image in Jeff's post above is not what he originally posted. I'm not sure why the original disappeared. Because Photobucket now charges a subscription. It's a pain because thousands of images across the Interweb have disappeared. The only way to make them reappear is for the original posters...
