Re: Polecats

Mothballs are called "nafthaleenee" in Greek. General hardware shops often stock them. If you can't get them in perforated plastic containers, make your own out of plastic tubular containers. They seem to work. My Honda wiring hasn't been chewed since I suspended tubes of mothballs around ...

Re: Ground Almonds and Dried Figs

Surely the cheapest method is to bung almonds in a blender and lie figs out in the sun to dry? I have a small fig tree in my garden and my part-time UK neighbour has a huge tree and lets me pick figs from it. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=how+to+dry+figs As for fresh almonds, I don't ...

Re: Skype Update

WhatsApp works on a Mac? I thought it worked only on a "smartphone" (which I don't have). I note that Microsoft has installed a Skype "update" on my Mac. On launching it, I discover that it "can not find a camera". I unclip camera and wave it in front of the screen but ...

Re: Driving from England to Chania March 2018

I was really tempted to comment on the post by the lady who was "pouring" over flowers in Lidl but I resisted the temptation - knowing that Philip would put his PC hat on and condemn me!

Re: Help. Shotguns not allowed.

Erect a clear, polypropylene roof over the area. Make it slope at least 3 degrees. Easy to hose down when the rain doesn't do it for you.

Re: Permanent Residence Document

I must have missed something. I have a beige (indefinite) residency permit. Are you saying that this (indefinite) permit is no longer indefinite?

P.s. I just used it to renew my IKA book in Haniá.

Re: email and new router problem

Clearly, the problem lies with the new router settings. To see them, launch your web browser and type in the address, such as: http://192.168.1.1 and hit Enter. That address might be on the router's label and/or in the instruction leaflet. Then type in the Admin name (usually "admin") and ...

BBC and VPN

I just cancelled my contract with StrongVPN because they can no longer provide an IP address that works with BBC. They refused a refund. There are VPN providers that still work but I'm not going to name them here because I'm sure that the BBC has people trawling the Internet looking for such posts s...

I have an acquaintance near Triopetra who would like periodic deliveries of organic veg. Willing to pay. Maybe worth considering if you can't find a better cause.
Sorry, I don't know of an orphan's charity.

Re: One Drive on not-so-smart Samsung phone

You might also find Calibre useful. It is an app that works on Windows and mobile devices that allows you to organise a library of books and read them. You can use it on your PC and then load them onto a reader device such as kindle, android smart phone/tablet or iPhone/iPad. Just to avoid ambiguit...

I thought that there were quite a few expats in and around Iraklio so I'm surprised that nobody has replied.
Unfortunately, most of the people whom I know are west of Rethymno.

Re: Homeless in Hania

I think there is an (possibly more than one) organisation that takes food out to the villages for people who are struggling but I don't have any details. The "Social Supermarket" (based in Vrises Town Hall) does this in Apokoronas district. Also there were a few cafés in Crete that ran a ...

We test ours every Autumn before the cold weather sets in. Otherwise, if you wait till everyone else has discovered their heating isn't working, you could wait weeks for a plumber.

Re: Wasps still around

At dinner we set a separate plate on a corner of the table furthest from us (or on an adjacent surface) and place bones and unwanted gristle on it. The wasps prefer to swarm around that, rather than risking contact with humans. The only time I have been stung is while riding my little motorbike (twi...

Re: Key ring torch

And what do you call it in Greek? I'm not aware of a specific word or phrase but "meea led lampa kleetheeoo" should do it* or "ena fakos meekros kleetheeoo" as all keyfob torches nowadays employ an LED anyway. As above, most Euro shops and supermarkets have them on display, incl...
