Re: Staying In

Surely it's part of the EU's 'Master Plan' to subjugate the individual member counties and turn the EU itself into a super state? It already has "Ambassadors", formerly a role representing their country in another. The EU turns up at the G8, a meeting of the 8 most powerful economies in th...

Re: Campervans in Crete .

I believe 'Wild Camping' is illegal in Greece, though I've done it many times without a problem, including once where the campsite I intended to use was closed and I parked in the gateway of an Industrial Unit by the side of the main road. I was gone long before any vehicles turned up though looking...

Re: Visa Waiver System

Warwick wrote For clarity the UK, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Romania are all members of the EU but are not in the Schengen Zone. but he left out the Republic of Ireland which has an opt out. Cyprus, Bulgaria and Romania do not have an opt out, but have yet to join, subtle difference. The fact that the Rep...

Re: Round and Round We Go

Apologies Nigel and everyone else on this forum for my misleading you with my claim of 84% turnout, it was late and I skim read headlines. It was the Scottish Independence referendum which had an 84% turnout. The figure you quote is the correct one. Nevertheless my basic point is still valid. The tu...

Re: Round and Round We Go

Nigel's well reasoned argument fails to address the ethical question I posed. One assumes that asserting parliaments supremacy by referring the triggering of Article 50 back to them is not just a 'paper exercise', for them to rubber stamp the governments decision. The MP's will vote according to the...

Re: Round and Round We Go

Warwick, you've supplied a legal answer which I'm sure knowing you is correct. However I tried to pose the question as one of ethics. One could of course take the view that the law must always be followed otherwise we have anarchy, but where would that have left the suffragettes or in more recent ti...

Re: Round and Round We Go

What an interesting debate. Every country elects "local" members to parliament or a senate etc to make laws and govern the country for the people, it's a semi sensible way of doing things, even here in Greece. (See how I got that in to make it relevant for this forum, Caroline and Clio). O...

Re: Cretan Energy

The efficiency figures quoted are as new. All panels lose efficiency every year during their nominal 25 year life. Not all panels deteriorate at the same rate, so it's worth taking that into account during the purchasing decision. The other thing to consider is the inverter. (This turns the low volt...

Re: Mobile wifi

Hi Doris It looks as if you have to change the APN, which doesn't look too difficult. Connect your mifi to your computer with a USB cable, access its software using your preferred browser, type something like 192.168.0.1 into the address bar (It depends on the MiFi manufacturer) enter the user name ...

Re: Mobile wifi

Hi Doris

I'm pretty sure that you cannot use a UK mifi unit in Greece, even if unlocked. They are configured for one mobile phone company. They can be re-configured for use in Crete but it is not easy (well not for me :D ) There is a lot of information on the internet re this subject.

Re: Car hire / driving conditions query, Chania area

Last autumn I tried to change a small amount of Sterling into Euro's at The Co-operative Bank of Xania. I was told that they were not allowed to do that. I don't know if that was a branch restriction or a temporary restriction due to the capital controls, or if that restriction still applies or is a...

Yes Andrew I was being serious! Sorry to disappoint margarita, but I was never into the rave scene, However I was chairman of a Licensing Committee and we licensed a number of all night raves. I used to attend together with my Environmental Health Officers to ensure that all the conditions we impose...

Re: Corned Beef - Ouch

Vick was very popular in the 1990's rave scene. Dancers would smother a face mask with it to wear during dancing. I never managed to find out if this was an ecstasy substitute or an ecstasy enhancer. Perhaps another board member can enlighten me.

Re: ΔΕΗ and card payment

Another anomaly, I used to have a direct debit with the National Bank of Greece to pay my WIND telephone bill. I cancelled that DD and tried to set one up with the Co-operative Bank of Xania to pay WIND and was told it was impossible as it was not on their list of payees, when I checked with WIND th...

Re: Don't you just love it here.

Yes Brilliant In the UK I used to take my car for a service and pre MOT check so as to avoid the hassle of a failure. Here I've eventually realised that it's better to have it MOT'd, find out what the tester thinks is wrong. You then get a temporary MOT (valid I think for 20 days). Continue to use t...
