Re: Car hire / driving conditions query, Chania area

Last autumn I tried to change a small amount of Sterling into Euro's at The Co-operative Bank of Xania. I was told that they were not allowed to do that. I don't know if that was a branch restriction or a temporary restriction due to the capital controls, or if that restriction still applies or is a...

Re: Corned Beef - Ouch

Yes Andrew I was being serious! Sorry to disappoint margarita, but I was never into the rave scene, However I was chairman of a Licensing Committee and we licensed a number of all night raves. I used to attend together with my Environmental Health Officers to ensure that all the conditions we impose...

Re: Corned Beef - Ouch

Vick was very popular in the 1990's rave scene. Dancers would smother a face mask with it to wear during dancing. I never managed to find out if this was an ecstasy substitute or an ecstasy enhancer. Perhaps another board member can enlighten me.

Re: ΔΕΗ and card payment

Another anomaly, I used to have a direct debit with the National Bank of Greece to pay my WIND telephone bill. I cancelled that DD and tried to set one up with the Co-operative Bank of Xania to pay WIND and was told it was impossible as it was not on their list of payees, when I checked with WIND th...

Re: Don't you just love it here.

Yes Brilliant In the UK I used to take my car for a service and pre MOT check so as to avoid the hassle of a failure. Here I've eventually realised that it's better to have it MOT'd, find out what the tester thinks is wrong. You then get a temporary MOT (valid I think for 20 days). Continue to use t...

Re: When to visit if time is limited

It won't affect the expats because under the Vienna Agreement they will be entitled to stay, only those people who have a holiday home and are not permanent residents in Greece. I agree with the suggestion April - June and September - November. Cheap direct flights are available for all but the retu...

Kathleen

As a UK resident you can also look at SAGA. Some companies restrict Annual Travel Insurance to 30 days maximum per trip. SAGA offer longer maximum stays.

Re: Bringing a cat permanently to Crete

Why don't you give your UK cat away and pick up a kitten out of a Refuse bin here? It will be younger and last much longer. You will save a lot of money and trouble ... oops sorry must apologize. I think I've gone native

Re: Bottled gas availability.

Ian wrote All the gas bottles I have seen in Crete are coloured blue, which means they contain butane. I am sure that you are aware that propane and butane have different regulators. Yes the gas is normally butane, though not all cylinders are blue, for instance gas sold by EKO is in white cylinders...

Re: Bottled gas availability.

There is no mains gas on Crete, so bottled gas is used extensively, just about every petrol station , garden centre etc sells it. I think the bottle is similar to the Italian bottle, so therefore quite different to the French bottle and of course the UK bottle which is different again. The bottles c...

Re: Speed limit change on National Road

Bob Don't worry about filippos's flippant answer. He's still running in his new car and can't go faster than 60 kph anyway  I always wondered why there was a speed camera there with no obvious speed limit, other than the national one. It never occurred to me that they just hadn't got around to...

Re: Water bill Kalives

Hi Carolina I didn't reply earlier because I didn't think I could make a significant contribution and I thought a resident of the old Kalyves Municipality would be able to give you a more definitive answer, but as a resident of the old Vamos Municipality I've always paid my water bill at Vamos Town ...

Re: UK drivers licence renewal

At 70 you automatically lose your C1, C1E, D! and D1E driving categories. If you wish to retain these a medical examination and eye examination will be necessary. This can delay the process, it took me 5 months to renew mine even though I had no health or eye problems. You are allowed to continue dr...
