Re: Tsipras: Europe at Crossroads

John, sorry, Loretta9, If Greece turns towards Russia, which is nothing more than a negotiating ploy rather than a reality, the West would a) never allow it and b) ostracise the country even further than it already has. Putin became Prime Minister to get around the two term Presidency rule. If you b...

Re: Tsipras: Europe at Crossroads

Boris Nemtsov wasn't the first of Putin's many opponents to end up on a marble slab. Who could forget plutonium poisoned Alexander Litvinenko or the unexplained death of businessman Boris Berezovsky. And how many has he jailed on trumped up charges? And yes, I know Ed Miliband mysteriously disappear...

Re: Tsipras: Europe at Crossroads

While i do not pretend to have in depth knowledge on Putin it is self evident he does not fear USA or UK and his robust stance, almost indifference towards the West superpowers is something hard to handle properly because they have not had to contend with a strong adversary before. Yep, must be jus...

Re: Tsipras: Europe at Crossroads

Before anyone feels that Putin, a nasty murderous thug, is hard done by they might want to check out his estimated personal net worth. "Oficially, Vladimir Putin’s net worth is thought to be around $70 billion according to Forbes, which makes the Russian the second-richest man in the world sinc...

Re: House Purchase Deposit safe in Greek Bank right now?

William Hill the bookmaker are no longer taking bets on a Greek exit.

If it was me I'd be very careful with your hard earned deposit.

Re: Speed Cameras Revisited

I've driven the National Road several times these past few months (Chania to Heraklion) and have noted a marked difference in general traffic speed. True, there will always be the young macho driver crazily overtaking somewhere but in the main the road seems far less like the "Wacky Races"...

Re: Cretan Independance

Crete probably has one of the more rounded economies in Greece. Tourism is the obvious one but it's also an agrarian economy and if people had to live without imported foodstuffs they probably could. The three main towns are year round working towns and whilst tourism is the bedrock there are varied...

Re: New system to encourage solar panel installations

Word of warning. I got involved with the Government backed solar panel scheme two years back i.e. placing panels on a roof and selling the power generated back to the grid. The opportunity seemed almost too good to be true i.e. a guaranteed return for 25 years and no tax on the monies earned for the...

From this morning's Chania Post 7/1/2015

"The flight from Athens to Chania (Aegean) was cancelled, while the flight of Ryanair from Athens to Chania landed at Heraklion airport “Nikos Kazantzakis”. Morning flight from Chania to Athens will take off at 9.25 instead of 6.50."

Re: Winter Fuel Allowance

Andrew, Disingenuous? Trolling? We have a difference of opinion on a £200 handout from the British Government. The same Government I might add which has supported pensioners more in the last five years than nearly any other section of society. Of course, we live on an island where there is real hard...

Re: Winter Fuel Allowance

From the UK Gov website: "Between November 2012 and May 2013, more than 9 million households benefited from the allowance, which is £200 for households with someone over women’s State Pension age and £300 for those with someone aged 80 and over. The universal benefit is designed as a valuable c...

Re: Winter Fuel Allowance

65 eh? At least I'll now know to stop watching the post... I simply think it's wrong, Andrew. We choose to move here and God knows we're lucky to be able to enjoy this little piece of paradise. What if you lived in Tenerife where year round the nightly mean temperature rarely drops below 60F. Should...

Re: Winter Fuel Allowance

As someone who comes from the NE of Scotland where the CH can be on year round (but definitely from October to May) the WFA is obviously important for low income pensioners. I wonder if people also think the UK government should extend the free over sixty bus pass to Crete so that UK pensioners can ...

Dave,

What about the previous week here when it was almost 70F and we were in shorts?
