The real question has to be asked: Why are the troika so hell bent on privatising everything in Greece? Is it for the good of the people? Will it keep prices down and provide a better service? I can only look at the UK as I don't know enough about other countries. The electricity companies in the U...

I've just renewed (last week) my boat registration document, it had run out in 2011. The cost to renew was €173 and it is now valid for eight rather than the previous four years. I also asked about the fishing licence requirement and was told the new eight year licence covers both the boat and the p...

scooby wrote:What about option 4? Invest in infrastructure, create jobs etc to get the economy moving, or is that too old hat nowadays?

It worked for Roosevelt but didn't that same approach (borrowing money to build new infrastructure) get the Greeks into a shed load of trouble with the Olympics?

Greece can't have it both ways. They don't want austerity (who can blame them) but nor do they really want to repay the debt. The fact that they couldn't, even if they wanted to, is another matter. I'm not surprised they don't want to leave Europe, the Greeks have received €100,586 million over and ...

Endemic tax evasion is the problem here. The reason why setting up and running a company here is a minefield of red tape and unhelpful, sour faced, government paid officials is the rules and regulations are designed to stop tax evasion rather than promote job creation. The reason the unions are so s...

Fuzz You wrote to John Nott, the then Defence Secretary? Just to clarify, the Defence industry was worth £22.1bn in 2010, employed 110,000 people and had £9.5bn in exports. Again, how would you propose the country made up the shortfall if, like the late Robin Cook wanted in 1997, we really did move ...

Well, that was a good rant. Let's stop making and selling weapons and never mind the tens of thousands of ordinary workers we throw out of job. And when we lose the associated tax receipts let's cut benefits and NHS funding. I'm guessing no one thought the Argentinians would have the audacity to inv...

Did Soros not primarily make money by using investor's savings to invest in a variety of companies, buying and selling other companies and also though currency speculation? Aren't the shops in Chania closed or closing because a) some property owners are still not being realistic with the rents, b) t...

Okay, I'll bite. If we don't have capitalism then what do we have? Also, why did Brown and Darling bail out the banks? Did the bankers ask, did the mandarins say they must or did the politicians make the decision all by themselves? Would Soros have been happy if, like Lehmans, the EU banks had gone ...

Another quote from the same article states: "It must be realized that there are only two fundamental political philosophies: those who are for freedom and individual rights and those who are against them. The types of political systems who are against freedom and individual rights are numerous,...

Warwick, When The Wealth of Nations was published it was 1776 and the Industrial Revolution was barely in its infancy. You surely can't compare Smith's world of commerce with today. Perhaps the link below gives a better description of Capitalism as it is today? http://famguardian.org/Subjects/Politi...

Have you heard of the Seven Sisters, Fuzzbaby? http://www.redicecreations.com/article.php?id=24673 There was and still is an oil cartel but please don't confuse the price at the pumps with the price of oil or petrol charged by the oil companies. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/road-and-rail-t...
