BRITISH BUILDERS

Its a shame that a couple of bad apples could spoil the reputation of some genuine Brits who are proper tradesmen and do good work. The disreputable ones seem to be those that weren't builders in the UK but decide on the plane on the way over that building is the way to go for them. I've heard of lo...

COST OF LIVING IN CRETE

Mike When the new property tax came out I checked my electric bills and it showed 36 sq metres, the house is actually 102 sq m. For peace of mind and no complications when I come to sell or hand down the property I wanted it corrected, I didn't want to be paying any fines or back tax which could com...

winter fuel payments for expats should be abolished

Maybe snide but then some people who I know for a fact are not short of a few bob moaning because they may not get the allowance because the rules are changing, they don't need it and it won't be spent on heating. Give it to the people who have to decide between feeding themselves or keeping warm or...

winter fuel payments for expats should be abolished

For a lot of expats that I know that receive the allowance ( I don't receive it as too young) it is used as more money to be used down the kafenion rather than be used for heating, financially it does not make a difference if they receive it or not.

legalisation of buildings

Whether the costs/fines are reduced is one thing, the main cost of the process is if you have to have new plans drawn up. To sell a house in the future, the house has to match the plans, that is not going to change now. When we bought our house five years ago (old village house) no one gave a hoot t...

Recent tax law change

Our accountant of the last four years in Agios Nikolaos told us last week that they can no longer deal with our tax affairs, the reason being that the time to put in the return has been shortened from four months to one month and they cannot afford extra staff to assist with all the returns. Anyway,...

With regards to insurance and foreign registered cars, some expats may try to tell you that it is legal to drive around in a UK registered car for as long as you like as long as it is insured..this is not correct after 6 months. After 6 months either import it correctly or buy a Greek car, pay the t...

Here And Now

Most of the immigrant workers that I have met from Pakistan, India or Egypt put most of the Brit ex pats to shame with regards being able to speak Greek. They have had to learn it to get day to day employment while I guess a lot of expats can't be bothered to learn more than three words, and Mythos ...

Property tax on electric bills - increase?

Hi On the site called livingingreece.gr there is a section on property tax a little way down, click to go to the whole article and scroll down to how property tax is calculated. In this section it explains that the property values ( zones ) will be adjusted higher for 2012 so the calculation will be...
