I also use Gmail as a backup and agree that it is pretty good at filtering junk.

My emails go through a proxy (or two - it depends on which address) with (not too aggressively set) spam filters and I manually check the rest with Mailwasher. My spam has gone down from an average of 100 a day 4 or 5 years ago to no more than 10 a day. That gets deleted on the final POP server with...

Is there anyway I can stop them arriving? Change your email address. If you are not a business it should not be too disruptive. If you really need to hang on to your existing address there are other ways but changing your address (and keeping it private if possible) is by far the easiest solution. ...

The guy who had the shop/PO didn't seem to have a clue what he was doing. I was there a couple of times too looking for stuff. They were nice people though and once they knew who I was they managed to deliver my mail to my address. Then, as you said Caroline, it all went back to Chania but the (for...

Yes, I know there is one in Souda. There have also been a couple of shops in Kounoupidiana acting as post-offices in the past but not since early last year. I thought that I might have missed a new post-office somewhere (I hadn't realized until last week that there was a KEP office in Kounoupidinana...

The first two look like the old beach area to the east of the harbour looking back towards the town from the far end.

Yes, in the forefront of the top two photos is the area of Chania called Koum Kapi which is located to the East of the eastern Venetian bastion.

Stormy weather

I suppose that those of you who live here have noticed that there is quite a storm blowing. For those who aren't in Crete to see here are a few photos: http://www.west-crete.com/photos-chania-storm.htm

Remember that the costs quoted do not include VAT, local taxes and TV license (which you pay with your DEH bill regardless of whether you have a TV or not). Still, Euro 140 for two months in a two beds apartment SEEMS high so I suggest you query it politely with your landlord and ask them if there m...

Another great translation from ERT today: Anti-skid chains are necessary to many parts of the province road net of central and South Greece because of the thick fog prevailing in the area.

I order loads of books (usually work stuff + the odd novel) from amazon and the postage is pretty minimal, maybe 5 or 6 Euro for several large books. I get them through amazon.de (they stock the same stuff anyway) but I think that the same rates would apply from amazon.co.uk. I had one parcel lost r...

I have been wondering too. Maybe we should stop and ask them.
