Thanks Kilkis, the fine/fee thing explains a lot, the obvious way to encourage the Greeks to comply with the rest of europe then, would be for the EU to greatly increase the fine.

It would seem if you want to live on Crete (or anywhere else), you just have to accept local pricing policy. I've got a friend at the moment trying to buy a new car on Crete, in Britain it costs around £14000 to £14500 and on Crete, being an island etc you would expect it to be a little dearer it is...
