Eleni

On hot or cold iron? Leav4e to soak or rub? I have had some success with spray-on oven cleaner. I saw elsewhere the idea of using ceramic hob cleaner but, when I looked in Carrefor, there were several all in Greek so I'm not sure. At over 4euro I am reluctant to buy on chance because 90% would be wa...

Cleaning the soleplate of an iron

I borrowed my daughter's Phillips iron - the one with a big powerful steam generator. Ironing a pair of black trousers . It stuck - too hot - & put loads of gunk on the soleplate. I've Googled but all I get is salt+vinegar with brillo which is not very helpful with a soleplate that has a "n...

Found it on Halidon Street

There are actually two shops near the harbour on Halidon. The one nearest the harbour didn't have sherry but did have all sorts of non-Greek stuff. Good place for those whose drinks cabinet has been emptied! The owner recommended next door. That is a specialised liquor store that gave me a choice of...

Late cards. What about UK post?

It seems to me that the moral of the story is not to trust the international postal service near Christmas. Is there any UK resident who can say what internal UK post was like? I had an idea that I might UPS a package containing all my UK bound cards to my brother and let him put them in the UK post.

Learn Greek & meet Greek people

I cannot conceive living anywhere other than Crete. The plusses far outway the negatives. If you learn to laugh at the bureaucracy and the driving you're half way to paradise! My advice is to learn Greek. It's not easy especially for the older mind but learn how to say "hello" and "go...

Wow! It's all too complicated

Conflicting advice from the experts. My income is from my private pension (fixed day every month) and the state pension (4-weekly) and, as the result of the totally unlamented Gordon Brown, a life-time of saving for a comfortable retirement has resulted in an income on which I just get by. So there ...

No joy

Visited several supermarkets and did not find sherry. I did get a bottle of port from Lidl ready for next year's christmas cooking! I found Green Curry paste at AB - it remains to be seen how close to Thai green curry it is. Actually, I did not expect to find sherry in a supermarket. I expect it is ...

Price variation

On a trip westwards from Chania last Friday, I noted prices in excess of 1.70. In Chania, 1.65 is easily found & I have seen today 3 at 1.64 (2 Shell and 1 JetOil) Don't know about eastwards - I rarely go that way. Haven't been up the "Souda Bank" recently so don't know what that usual...

Got 'em

Presented chit & got all three missing parcels that had been held together with an elastic band.

There's a lesson to be learned: if parcel is urgent make sure it comes by courier with a tracking system.

I'll head for Bank of Greece tomorrow taking passport etc.

When you withdraw from the sterling account, do you get euros to spend?

Can I bank a cheque drawn in sterling

I could get the answer by queuing (spelling?) at a bank where I have a savings account - the only one I could get when I arrived in Crete with cash but experience suggests there are people knowledgeable enough and kind enough to save my time! I have received a cheque for over £1000. Do Greek banks a...

Delayed letter

Received today letter containing tax refund that was posted 26th November

Also chit for non delivery of parcel: I was at home all day & buzzer is so loud that it would have woken me from my after-lunch nap. Conveniently, no time is on the chit.

Postal delays

I have 3 parcels somewhere in the post. 1 posted in November 1 from Amazon due 20th 1 from Scotland posted 1st week of December Usually, parcels bigger than can go in the letter box are taken back to the Post Office and a very small slip is left. Has anyone ever tried to find a parcel without the sl...
