Re: Earth Tremor

Yes, felt it here as well, though as Mixos said, only one tremor in this area.

Re: Wasps still around

I agree, though they do seem to be slowly dying, as I keep finding dead ones. Wish they would go away - large bluebottle type flies ditto. We've never known so many flies this late in the year - October is normally the bad month, but they just go on and on.

Nothing whatever, apart from the fact that it is too far for those of us living at the other end of the island. Having an event like this more or less in the centre would have been more appropriate and given an equal chance for everyone to attend.

Re: Meet the Britsh Ambassador, Chania

I agree, @alansmithnl, - especially what she has to say about the potential effect of Brexit on our lives here. A pity that the Embassy staff didn't stop to consider that British people in Crete live elsewhere than in Chania! An event of this type should have been held in Heraklion, to give the grea...

Re: Organ donation in Greece

In the UK the donation is not used on NHS patients until the sample test comes back clean, so if the Greeks use the same precautions (let's hope they do) I don't see why they need a blanket ban. This is timely, as I've been making enquiries about donating blood here - looks as if I can save myself ...

Can't help with accountants, as I'm in the wrong area, but highly recommend Nomad for removals. Excellent service at both ends of the operation.

Re: Rats

These are the killing kind, Margarita. We sometimes catch tiny live mice in them - they get a second chance and are released well away from the house. We tried humane traps originally - totally useless. These are the only method I will use. Those mentioned above are abhorrent to me.

Re: Rats

We've had success with the large plastic rat traps (from Stivaktakis agricultural shop, or Manos next to the traffic lights in Sitia), baited with crunchy peanut butter. I will absolutely not use poison - not only because of the danger to our dogs, but in order not to have poisoned rats entering the...

Re: Mosquitoes

I regularly get another small black insect that gets into any dry food that isn't completely sealed. Flour seems to be their favourite but at least they are then visible. Warwick Most of the flour here seems to have them in the bag when you buy it. Putting the unopened bag of flour in the freezer f...

Re: Arrivals at Heraklion airport

Yes, arrivals IS still at the extreme left hand end of the airport terminal. Parking outside the building on a Sunday might be possible, but suggest you use the car park and arrange to meet your friends by the coffee stall near departures (on the outside of the building) - easy to locate and you won...

It certainly works with a Greek debit card - that's how I top up most of the time.

Re: postal service

That matches what we've found in Sitia - although I've never tested how late in the day one can "get away" with posting, and we always post at the main post office. 2-3 days to the UK is the norm in the summer; slightly longer in the winter. Incoming mail takes about a week for letters/car...
