So it would point to perhaps one of the video card settings being out of kilter


That was my initial thought! A graphic card set up for two monitors with only one monitor attached. But it sounded too simple and obvious. Still, got to your display properties and make sure that only one monitor is enabled.

Well done gang, we got there in the end. The second monitor (we don't have one, by the way) was mysteriously enabled.
No nasties were found, which is also good news.

Thanks for allowing me to get back to the washing. :lol:

I'd thought that it would have to detect 2 monitors before it actually allowed the setting for 2 monitors to be "live" but there again I have only ever tried the 2 monitor settings when there actually were 2 monitors. Now I know differently.

So your time poring over a hot PC today hasn't been wasted, Paul. The more I know about computers (still not much) the more I doubt that they are as logical as they should be.

I would love 2 monitors, but on my Mac, not the PC.

They make detailed work in Photoshop a doddle.
