KTEL have launched a new bus route, based at the Rethymno bus station, which may be of interest to anyone wanting to make a cultural tour of the nomos's high spots without having to drive. It goes from the city to Arkadi monastery, then on to the new museum at ancient Eleutherna, and finally the potters' village of Margarites before returning, via Perama and Panormos, to Rethymno.
Information doesn't seem to be on the website yet, but the KTEL leaflet gives start times as 10.00, 11.00, 1.00 and 2.30. It also gives the times at each stopping point, and the implication is that this is a hop-on hop-off service. I hope to be able to confirm that, and give ticket prices, in the next few days.
Until very recently there was a useful and little-known free car park right next to the bus station, but that's now got the diggers in. However, the new service's schedule works well for anyone wanting to come, say, from Chania by bus - the 8.30 am would get you to Rethymno in good time to board the first round-trip bus
