We have now moved in to our new cottage in Xirosterni and I wanted to ask for some advice about 2 things!

1) Can any one suggest a good taxi company that I can email/whats app..to take me from airport to Xirosterni and out and about? Ideally on email so I can just book flight times etc

2) Does anyone know of a good flight connection from Stanstead/Heathrow/Luton to Athens, which doesn't entail a 5 hour wait to then go to Chania? I can't seem to see one!

thanks so much x

Hi

Our house is not far from Xirosterni - I cycle through the village to the sea sometimes in the summer.

We use Taxi4crete.gr Website: https://taxi4crete.gr/

Advantages: Kostas, who runs it, is a lovely man who speaks perfect English, is interesting to talk to and 100% reliable

You can book online from the website.

We live in quite an obscure place (our house is in a field with olive trees down a track from a village) and he and his drivers never had a problem finding it.

The car is a big Merc

He is not that expensive given the service he provides. Vv highly recommended.

Flights! In summer it’s easy - RyanAir or EasyJet should get you to Crete directly- in the past i’ve flown with both from Stansted - not sure about now. Aegean are also worth a look though when we have flown with them we have always had a stop in Athens - normally overnight. If you do this, rather than staying at the airport (where there is an expensive Sofitel - convenient but has seen better days) there are some good value hotels in the centre of Athens. We have stayed multiple times at the Plaka Hotel (imaginatively, it’s in Plaka, so near the Acropolis) and it is v good value. I even recommended it to someone for a business trip to Athens and they liked it a lot too.

Winter is much more problematic. It’s expensive and as far as I know there are no direct flights. Next week we are flying with Norwegian Air from Gatwick via Oslo to Athens and my stress levels are through the roof having read reviews describing late flights/ cancellations. We are going Athens to Chania with Sky Express who are new. On the way back we were going with Cobalt Air - i’d never heard of them - they were a Cypriot airline that went bust in October. So, we’ve booked EasyJet to Gatwick as an alternative. We will get the money back from the cancelled flight because we paid by credit card. Lesson: never, ever, pay by a debit card if you can use a credit card - I had something similar buying a sofa from House of Fraser in the U.K. just before they went into administration (i’ve either chosen suppliers badly this year or been unlucky) and the credit card co refunded the money quite fast.

Oops. Just found out the flight from Oslo is direct to Chania, but we are flying back to Athens on Sky Express.

Thanks so much...I will contact the taxi guy.

We have been doing Ryan air to Athens but then have been waiting 5 hours for the connecting flight. I was just wondering if we were missing a trick!

I haven't flown outside the direct flight season for nearly 10 years but back then a 5 hour wait in Athens in one direction was pretty normal. Usually less the opposite way?

Aegean from Heathrow at 12.15 pm has a 3hr 40 min connection time in Athens. Aegean from Gatwick at 11.30am has a 50 min Athens connection (not every day though).

If you book through flights with Aegean they will get you to your final destination at no extra cost even in the event of a delay & missed connection.

If you book with two different airlines e.g. Easyjet and Aegean there is no connection guarantee if you are delayed and you would have to pay for a later onward flight.

Is that still true with a 50 minute connection time, Carol? In the old days, before t'interweb, when I used to fly quite a bit for work we used to book tickets through a business travel agent, He sometimes found us flights that had a less than 1 hour connection time but always advised against them and warned us that the airline was not responsible for the ongoing flight if you missed a connection, even with a consolidated ticket, if the connection time was less than 1 hour. Does that rule no longer apply?

Speaking from recent experience, Aegean responded very well when we had a very short connection time and missed the connection. The delay was caused by a "technical", and Aegean booked us onto a BA flight on the same route and with just enough time to transfer. We had assistance from Aegean throughout. It is an excellent airline. It may be relevant that the original connection was to another Aegean flight, but still impressive service.

I have had that as well, and as I don't get to see Athens very often , I jumped on to the Metro and went into Athens for lunch and a mouch around the museum ...the Metro is very cheap and easy to use .....

If you travel with Sky express from Athens (or Thessaloniki) you would automatically get access to the lounge with decent food and good WiFi. Did it a few times and time passed very quick when you are comfortable, in contact with the world or doing Work.
Just an idea to consider
Cheers

Airport minimum connection times in every airport are different and are issued by each airport, rather than the airlines themselves. In Athens I think it is just 40 minutes minimum for sectors booked and issued when using the same airline or a code-sharing airline (i.e. airline partners) for international to domestic flights or vice versa, and when baggage can be checked through to final destination.

In 'the good old days' I was actually a Business Travel Agent and our ticketing 'bible' gave all the different minimum connecting times for every airport across the globe. We had to refer to these to book any connecting flight and if they were within the airport's minimum then we and the passenger were covered for missed connections or delays. Whether or not it was always a wise choice to book the absolute minimum is a different matter as a missed connection or luggage arriving the next day is not the best scenario, so we would also often insist to passengers that they needed at least an hour minimum.

The Aegean flights I quoted above, with 50 minutes between flights in Athens, come up on Aegean website as a bookable connection with a through fare (one fare).
