Noisy workmen

Postby johnincrete » Sun Apr 18, 2021 5:02 pm

Is it true that there is a few hours in the afternoon when you can't make noises?

Recently, there has been a revival of house maintenance in this area. But the whole of Sunday afternoon, someone has been grinding metal. Very noisy. And someone else has been using a very noisy generator.

I seem to remember that we should be quiet from 1.00pm to 5.00pm. Is this just an urban myth or is there a law?

And what can you do about these inconsiderate workers?

It is more 3 pm to 5 pm rather than 1 pm to 5 pm. Typically people would eat lunch from 2 pm to 3 pm and then go for siesta for 2 hours. I don't know if it is actually enshrined in law but in northern Greece you are asking for serious trouble from your neighbours if you break the rule. In Crete it doesn't seem to be observed as rigorously, especially out in the countryside where using petrol strimmers and chainsaws right through the afternoon would be pretty common.

I believe "quiet hours" in the summer (from April 1st) are designated between 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. and 3 to 5.30 p.m. Residents are allowed to make a complaint to the police if disturbances are noted between these hours and during the customary siesta break.
This means that between those hours, residents are not allowed to carry out construction or other activities that cause noise, practice musical instruments or play music at high volumes, carry out noisy discussions or arguments, or use alarms or other security systems without due cause.

I recall this subject was raised on "The Forum" 2-3 years ago. There are slightly different hours for winter.

Noisy discussions or arguments? In Greece? I can hardly imagine such a thing!

And the purpose of a siesta in winter-time?

The same as in summer. To have a short sleep after lunch.
