English size double bed mattress

Postby johnincrete » Sun Aug 23, 2020 8:10 am

Can anyone recommend where I can buy an English-sized double bed mattress in Chania?

Also, when I last bought a mattress in UK, it was some 20 years ago. My current one was bought in Chania by my daughter as a present. So any advice on the modern features would be greatly appreciated.

The reason for buying new is that I wake up after only 4 hours sleep feeling uncomfortable. Please, no advice about chemicals that are designed to get you to sleep Not keep you asleep!

Thanks all

Hi

I have not bought one here. Do measure exactly in cm your old UK one to get exact size. We made a mistake in measuring our US king size and ended up about 8cm too narrow because of differences in US to UK sizes.

I would also look online at stroma to gauge current trends and improvements over the years. There are Greek companies who will make to your specifications.

I really like the ‘pillow top’ style which we have. The mattress is still whichever you prefer soft, hard etc, but with husband preferring hard and me medium, this is a happy compromise and allows me to drift off before the snoring starts. Obviously that must be the dogs, couldn’t possibly be dear husband!

I've not bought in Greece, so I cannot make a specific recommendation, but Media Strom have shops in Chania and they custom make mattresses in any size you want, in 2 cm increments. The actual size can vary by ±1 cm from what you order. If you go into Chania on the Omalos road, go right towards the city centre where you join the Kissamos road. Take the first left into a small side street before you get to the next traffic lights at a shoe shop called VoiNoi. There is a Media Strom shop on the corner of the side street. It is usually easy to park close to the shop.

The last mattress I bought is pocket sprung with a layer of memory foam on top. They tend to be more expensive and they are quite deep, i.e. 35 cm, which can be a problem if you already have fitted sheets for a 25 cm deep mattress, but I find it very comfortable.

Simba Mattresses seem to get good reviews, e.g. Which Best Buy. Looking at the construction I am not totally convinced. They also seem to have a limited range of sizes. If one of them suited you, you could get it delivered to Nomad Crete Express and shipped to Chania for around £85.

I know Scooby bought a bed from Coco-Mat on Akritiri and I think he was very disappointed with it. Very expensive and not comfortable at all so I would not recommend them.

We bought a Coco Mat mattress and it's wonderful. Expensive but worth it.

I guess it's all down to personal taste, Margarita.

I visited Medical Strom accompanied by my Greek-fluent daughter. The service from the young lady in the shop was excellent and the chance to test the many types of mattresses was of great help. I was shocked when I made my choice! I had chosen the most expensive one they had - typical of me! But then I was told the price - I had budgeted 500 Euro but the cost was only half this! Then, when I asked about how long it would take to make the special size I was amazed to be told "just 3 or 4 days". The assistant asked again about the size. She was very careful to be sure and reduced the width by 2cm to allow clearance between the side rail and the mattress so that the sheet could be tucked under easily.

After leaving the shop, my daughter told me that, not only she but the whole of her husband's family had bought all their beds from that shop!
I now wait in anticipation!

As I write, there is another post being pessimistic about Crete's future. Yes, some things must change but, encouraged by this typically Cretan service, I am more optimistic. We expats should support our local shops and not resort to "English" shops and the internet to buy frequently more expensive and always not so good products - some might be surprised just how lucky we are to live here!

Was it Medical Strom or Media Strom, John? They are very close together. Medical Strom is on the corner where the Omalos Road meets the Old National Highway from Kissamos to Chania. Media Strom is about 200 m further into Chania on the left hand side.

OK, John. Medical Strom is a small independent company founded in Chania. They tend to specialise in orthopaedic and anatomic mattresses, hence the name presumably. Their factory is further out on the Omalos road before you get to the New National Highway, 91 Kazantzakis Street.

Media Strom is a much bigger company with stores all over Greece. I think they also make their own mattresses, rather than selling the big brands, but presumably in a central factory somewhere in Greece.
