Dog on Ferries

Postby P&B » Thu Jan 04, 2018 5:36 pm

We're exploring options for how to transport our pet dog from the UK to Chania.

Does anyone have any experience of transporting a pet dog on the ferry from Ancona to Patras either in a car or as a foot passenger? Same question applies to the ferry from Piraeus to Chania?

If in a car, is the dog allowed out of the car and if the dog is allowed on deck, is it allowed inside or only outside?

The dog is NOT allowed to STAY in the car and must be kept on a leash and wear a muzzle. Some ferries have a limited number of cabins where dogs can stay with their owners. Some have kennels on the top deck where they can be left. Also, I am pretty sure the dog can stay with the owner on the deck areas and in the outside cafés but they are not supposed to go in the inside lounges. See for example ANEK Lines FAQs eleventh question down.

We came with our greyhound as foot passengers 10 years ago. We took the ferry from Bari to Igoumenitsa, this being the shortest route at the time. Didn't want the poor dog to have to cross his legs for 24 hours! We booked an extremely clean 'pet cabin'. There are now pet cabins on the route Pireas - Chania. FYI, as a greyhound he was happy to be muzzled at all times, but we were asked endlessly "does he bite?", so maybe the muzzling requirement wasn't strictly enforced then. Don't know if it is now. Good luck!
