I thought about doing it many years ago when I lived close to the FYROM border. It wasn't that long after NATO had been bombing Serbia and, although the conflict had ended, I was advised that people with UK passports weren't exactly flavour of the month. It's probably better now.

So we plan on doing this trip in a Ford Transit Van (SWB) - The reason we are looking at road all the way is the ferries from with minoan and anek do not have any selection for a van. Only minibus and campervans. (Ancona/Igoumenitsa route ) Hence looking at driving the long route through Hungary, Serbia, etc.

Does anyone know if vans are allowed on Greek ferries? Nothing on the Anek Lines website.

Maybe no vans come on the Piraeus to Chania route. Anyone noticed?

It's a few years since I went on the ferries ,but I'm sure there were vans of all sizes ...from Italy to Greece and from the Greek mainland to the Islands ...

Length and height of van / car / trailer is what matters!!

I know people who have travelled several times with ANEK/Minoan and while I'm not sure of the sizes of the vans they drive I do know they don't all have the same size vehicle. One man, no longer in Crete did use a Transit but short or long I don't remember. I'll see if I still have contact details for anyone and if so I'll ask them.

If you haven't e-mailed ANEK it's worth doing so. I've e-mailed them several times with a variety of questions and have always received sensible replies, usually in 24 hours or sooner. (I used to run a website for UK/Crete travel but never mentioned that when communicating with ANEK).

They take any vehicle. Try this site or follow Filippos' advice. From the first page:

Vans - Do I need to travel as freight?

On Anek Lines, all enclosed vans (with side panels) must be booked as freight regardless of length or load.

They definitely take vans, I know someone who does Crete-UK-Crete in a LWB van at least 2-3 times a year with no problem, don't know the cost though but Ancona-Patras is not cheap for a car. As others have said, best to email the ferry companies.

Good morning! I have received an email reply this morning from Anek saying "unless your vehicle is a minibus, with seats in the back, you cannot make your booking on-line, since you have to contact with different cargo departments for each routes"

So thanks everyone for the input, it's much appreciated.

Will post any costs/feedback from them on here.

I'll be surprised if you can't book with a phone and credit/debit card.

Did you try the ANEK Freight web site I linked above? They have different sections for freight and non-freight.

I am in touch with the cargo and freight departments and waiting for quotes from them. Should hopefully have something through later today.

So far heard back from Anek Lines' Adriatic sea cargo dept:
Ancona-Igoumenitsa-Ancona for van and with a cabin for 2 persons it is 595Euro. That is with an early bird discount.

Still waiting on quote for Piraeus-Chania-Piraeus sectors.

Hi matilpa

Probably a silly question, but have you considered the possibility of squeezing your belongings into a 'compact' van i.e VW Caddy, Fiat Doblo, Citroen Berlingo, Peugot Partner, Vauxhall Combo, Renault Kangoo etc .... my understanding is that these size vehicles are based on a car chassis and will go on the ferries at the appropriate car price. That's what a friend who makes the journey several times a year in a VW Caddy tells me, anyway .... worth a thought?

Worth checking if that is a two birth cabin or if you are sharing with strangers in a 4 birth? Freight drivers largely travel alone and four drivers who are complete strangers will often share a 4 birth cabin.
