We've both hired many times in the UK using our Greek licences, Jeff - no problems with Hertz, Avis, Budget or Europcar, so it may be that Sixt are being "picky". Your name is in Roman letters, which is what matters, surely and, as others have said, the codes are Europe wide.

I have hired with several different UK companies with a Greek licence and never been questioned, e.g. Green Motion, Easirent, Avis, Europcar. I've also rented from Sixt in France using my Greek licence, although on that occasion I wasn't the first named driver. What's the point of having a common EU format so that it is recognised in all EU countries if hire companies are going to refuse to recognise it?
