Cataract Operation

Postby Yin&Yang » Thu Jul 19, 2018 10:48 am

Hi All
Are cataract operations carried out under IKA or are they, as I suspect, all carried out in a private/paid basis?

I would try contacting Eleni Pavlidou and ask her the question. She is an Ophthalmic Surgeon who conducts various types of eye surgery. I know she carries out eye opertions privately at Gavrilakis clinc but she may also do them under IKA at the General Hospital. Worth asking. It is also possible that it is done under IKA at the eye hospital in Heraklion and I knew she has contacts with surgeons there.

I've had both eyes done here in Greece, and in both cases it was IKA.

Each one took 4 appointments - diagnosis, health checks, the op, then final checkup. Compared to the NHS waiting list times I've heard about both sets of procedures were done very quickly.

However, I'm over in sunny Arkadia so can't help you with contacts.

Be careful the state hospitals only offer basic lenses, you get no choice. My state consultant advised me to go private so that I could choose more suitable lenses, IKA part pay this in private clinics, 250€ per eye, but that may have changed now

I know two people who have had eye operations in Heraklion eye hospital and both rate it very highly. They were not cataract operations.

Greece, and indeed Crete, are the pioneers of laser eye surgery, check out Professor Ioannis Pallikaris
