ATM charges

Postby Bluebird » Sun Oct 06, 2019 6:05 pm

Evening all. I'm currently on holiday in Crete, and just gone to my usual ATM to withdraw from my English account and been advised that the machine now charges 2.50€ for the transaction! It definitely didn't do that last time I was here, in June. Does anyone know which banks will not charge me, or try to baffle me with questions about exchange rates?..! Thanks in advance x

I think they all now do it but I'm not certain.

The Keep Talking Greece article is really about Greek banks cross charging for withdrawals from another Greek bank's ATM. Bluebird's question is about withdrawals from a Greek bank ATM using a UK card.

I must confess I find the Keep Talking Greece article a bit confusing. I thought Greek banks had always charged for withdrawals from ATMs of another bank, except for the Cooperative banks which are free when using another Cooperative bank's card. e.g. Bank of Chania card in a Pankritia ATM etc.

Yes, I have a UK bank card that I sometimes use to get cash from an ATM in Greece ...and I had never been charged to use it ...until last week when I needed a bit of cash and I used it in a Piraeus bank ATM...

Avoid EuroNet (blue and yellow ones) unless you want to pay through the nose.
