The Far East

Postby Guy M » Mon Aug 03, 2020 6:46 am

We came to Kato Zakros again yesterday.

Road to Sitia easy now the new piece has been completed.

Season just started in Zakros - in the last few days it’s suddenly busy - of Greeks mainly. The place we stay -Yianni’s Retreat - is completely full.

It’s another World here and highly recommended.

Oops. Sorry. It won’t appeal to everyone, but it certainly does to me.

Be quiet Guy! - Have a nice time though.

Will you go down to the Nature Reserve at Xerokambos? We like the birds there in the Spring and Autumn.

Tomorrow’s plan. The beaches here are v empty compared with the last 2 years we have been here. Pretty wonderful (for us) actually.

We spend a few days there every year. Sometimes there is a French yacht moored up in the bay, so I assume they are regular visitors at a similar time of year to us. It is a very special place.

We know a German chap who spends two months a year on Kriti. He is a walker, so visits for a month in the Springtime and another one in the Autumn, - when the temperatures are better for walking. Each visit he has two weeks in Kato Zakros, and another two on the south coast of Rethymno. He has been doing the same holidays for years and still loves both places. He has noticed marginally more tourism over recent years, especially in Kato Zakros, particularly now the coaches visit there to pick up the walkers from gorge and also visitors to the archaeological site. Most of the time though it is still a mini paradise!

Shhhhh!

Have a nice day tomorrow Guy.

Fingers crossed that we can make our annual trip to Palekastro in mid-October. Driving from Palekastro to Zakros and Xerocambos is so beautiful, with the occasional detour to Kato Zakros. We were married in Palekastro so will always be tied to the Far East !

Palaikastron is really lovely.

This place is great for lunch there.
