This is indeed pretty alarming, although hardly surprising given that many Greeks are holidaying at or visiting tourist locations in Greece (as are many Brits holidaying in or visiting Bournemouth and the South West etc, with similar consequences).

It would be good to know something about the distribution of cases - are they all in the cities? - or are they now more widely spread around the prefectures?

As expected, but I guessed a few weeks ago that cases would be around 400, so I got it wrong, but as my o’l man use to say “You’ll burn your tongue drinking it so quick”.

10 of the 14 in Chania were from 1 hotel. 1 other case was related to a previous case. Nothing about the other 2?

Unsurprisingly the highest incidence of new cases before easing of lockdown were in the big population centres like Attica and Thessaloniki. When the government eased lockdown and allowed travel around the country the citizens of those cities take the virus to places where it was completely absent. Typically people from Attica holiday on Crete, the Cyclades and the small islands in the Saronic gulf. People from Thessaloniki mainly go to Halkidiki. These are the new hotspots for virus spread. Obviously Greece also suffers from other outbreaks, like food processing plants, that many countries have experienced.

Tourists from outside Greece have also made a contribution. Everybody seems to concentrate on the number of travellers who test positive when entering Greece but there are also many cases that are not detected. For some time now Keep Talking Greece has reported the distribution of new cases amongst different groups. One significant group is always travellers who reported for testing after becoming ill while in Greece, i.e. they got into Greece without being detected and circulated amongst other travellers and the local population passing on the virus before becoming ill. Since a large percentage of infected people remain totally asymptomatic, or have such mild symptoms that they would probably pass it off as a bit of a cold, you can probably multiply the number of circulating infectious cases listed in Keep Talking Greece by at least 2 and possibly as high as 4.

As I have said in previous posts I do not believe that the Greek government has the ability to control the spread of the virus using test-trace-isolate. The higher the number of new cases per day grows the harder it gets to control. Lockdown was so successful that a very small proportion of the population have already been infected. Observance of other mitigating measures, like masks and social distancing, is low. Once you release lockdown, therefore, the virus returns to its previous rate of spread or pretty close to it.

Very worrying.

Ah, this then would make my original estimation of approx 400 by now, true. Thanks.

Pull the Drawbridge up. Close the gates. Now it is getting serious. We even have an infection in Lasithi.

Koronovirus in Crete: 11 are being treated, a 42-year-old in a more serious condition

There are officially 129 cases of coronavirus on the island
11 people are being treated in Covid 19 units in the hospitals of Crete, as it became known after the announcement of the record number for Crete of the 26 cases that were found positive in the coronavirus in the last 24 hours (See HERE) , according to the latest announcements of EODY.

It is recalled that now the cases of coronavirus in Crete officially amount to 129, according to the official information on the Government's website.
According to the information, out of the 11 who are being treated, 4 are in the University Hospital of Heraklion, of which a 42-year-old German woman is in a more serious condition and is expected to be intubated and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
Another 3 are hospitalized in the Covid -19 Unit in the Venizelio Hospital of Heraklion, two patients in the Hospital of Chania and two more in the Hospital of Rethymno.

The headache for the local bodies has to do mainly with the large - in relation to the region - number of cases recorded in Messara (See HERE) but also in the case of Chania, in the fact that 11 of the 14 cases announced on Sunday in Chania concern a single hotel
In Messara, the fact that among the cases that have been confirmed in recent days include a priest, his wife and two singers has not caused much discussion!

Some of the translations are a bit misleading and need to be read with care. For example:

ros21m wrote:...There are officially 129 cases of coronavirus on the island...

There are not currently 129 cases of Coronavirus on Crete. Altogether through the pandemic 129 cases of Coronavirus have been recorded on Crete. Many/most of those are now resolved. It would be nice if EODY got its act together and reported how many active cases there currently are in each region. That is a much better indicator of the level of risk.

PS Not a criticism levelled at Ros21. I realise it is the wording of the original article in Greek that is not clear and that is further exacerbated by a poor Google Translation. A better translation would be: "The cases of Coronavirus on the island officially amounted to 129" which at least sounds a bit more like a cumulative total rather than a current figure.

You must go careful with these quotes. Many of the cases within the 80 that you write, are tourists with a positive virus checked at the two Airports. These people are in the quarantine hotels. The actual number of citizens infected is much lower.

Sorry I can't remember but saw a reference again to it this morning saying a tourist/visitor to the hotel had brought it in and 9 others got infected but this morning's article didn't say if they were workers or other tourists?

Just found it! Translated

From Flash News:
Alarm for coronavirus cases in Crete - Ten in a hotel in Chania
Alarm for coronavirus cases in Crete - Ten in a hotel in Chania
Five cases in the Municipality of Phaistos - Ten people are hospitalized - The "prophetic" statement Hardalia for Crete

A shock for the society of Crete was the announcement of EODY on Sunday afternoon for the 26 cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours on the island.

According to information from Flashnews.gr, the 14 new cases announced by EODY for Chania, include 10 cases in the hotel staff in the area of the Municipality of Chania.

According to the same information, all 10 employees of the hotel have been placed under house arrest.

Also, out of the 10 new cases in Heraklion, five relate to tests performed on residents of the Municipality of Phaistos after the cases on two elderly visitors.
It should be noted that EODY also announced a new case in Rethymno, which according to information concerns the son of the 52-year-old Rethymniotissa who is being treated.

Today, a total of 10 people are treated in covid clinics - 19, namely:

Four at PAGNI
Three at Venizelio
Two at Chania Hospital
One at Rethymno Hospital
However, the rapid increase in cases in Crete should probably not come as a surprise as the experts knew something, if it is taken into account that the Undersecretary. Civil Protection Nikos Hardalias, on Tuesday, August 11, when asked why the restriction of catering business hours was applied in Crete, answered:

"In Crete we have cases scattered throughout the island. Thirty-three, there is no reason to panic. But what does the tracking show?
It follows from the traces that we have a large number of close contacts high risk (high risk), not low risk (low risk).
And through the traces of these 33 and their close contacts, a large percentage of movement from regional unit to regional unit results ".

So from August 11 to August 15, the 33 cases he said, became more than 100 and the increase continues.
