compulsory voting

Postby Dan » Thu Aug 23, 2007 10:45 pm

I'm curious about what happens if a Greek doesn't vote. What sanctions are used? Surely some can't make it, or don't bother, even if it's very few indeed.

it happened , it vanished and was forgotten almost as soon as it happened.

(there were strong mitigating circumstances)

Back to the original question - not a lot from what I can see. Last year we had local elections and everyone I know voted. The process went to round two and many didn't bother voting again, including my lesser half, to-date he hasn't even received a letter slapping his wrists.

On the other hand my Greek teacher was supposed to help with the vote counting, on round two, but was never informed of the fact. Quite happily she went off to Athens for the weekend only to get messages and phone calls telling her the Police were looking for her!!!

Not sure of the position when it comes to a General Election, they may view this more seriously.

They used to issue little white voting books to every individual over 18 which had to be stamped at each election to show that you had voted. You had to show this book when you applied for a Greek passport, and if you hadn't voted you weren't allowed out of the country!

They did away with the book a number of years ago, and although I don't think the law has changed, i.e. voting is still supposedly compulsory, they don't enforce it (strange that ... .... or not!).

Thanks for your responses. I asked a Cretan friend the same question & she was completely nonplussed by it: why would anybody NOT want to vote?

Think we will know the answer to your question very soon. A number of people here are saying that they will not be voting, this includes Cretan friends and Athenians due to return to the city on Friday.
