fuel rip off

Postby greekboy » Wed Oct 12, 2011 11:41 am

Yesterday fuel was being charged at 1.73 per ltr, 2 hours later the same petrol station was charging 1.79 per ltr, the petrol station had not received a delivery in between the price hike but the price rise coinincided with the news of the petrol strike which is now cancelled but hundreds of motorists were ripped off yesterday by filling up their cars thinking there was going to be a fuel shortage.Today this garage is selling fuel at 1.77.

What ever happened to the much-publicised Investigation into fuel prices in the Chania area? Gone to ground along with a lot of other things, I suppose. Someone is probably trying to work out the effect on them personally of prosecuting someone else!!

And you get the same mileage after converting?

I'm not disagreeing with the advice to switch to LPG but would offer one word of warning. In many cases the gas tank is fitted where the spare wheel used to be so you have no spare. They usually supply one of these pressurised canisters that inject a sealant and pump up the tyre in case of a puncture. From my experience the most common form of puncture on Crete is a blow out caused by hitting a rock. I've experienced it twice now. In that situation the hole is so big there is no chance of a repair of any sort working. Just a thought.

I've no direct experience but from what I have read you get about two thirds of the MPG and in Greece you pay about 60 % of the price per litre. That converts to a saving of about 12 %. In the UK there is a much bigger difference between the price of LPG and petrol so it is more viable.

Diesel is more cost effective in Greece regarding running costs. Diesel is currently about 20 % cheaper than petrol BUT you also get between 10 % and 20 % better consumption so between 30 % and 40 % saving. Unfortunately diesel cars are more expensive than petrol cars by a bigger margin than the LPG conversion so it is debatable which is best overall. Probably depends if you do high mileage.

PS My experience of driving on the mainland is that petrol is between 10 and 20 cents cheaper than in Crete.

Text an SMS to 54151 with your area and you'll receive a text reply with the 3 cheapest petrol stations in the area, and the prices. It's free from all Greek mobiles.

I just tried it. I texted XANIA to 54151 and received this:

EKO 1.687, MELIDONIOY, XALEPA - SHELL 1.696 AKROTIRIOY 96, XANIA, BP 1.697 AKROTIRIOY 110, XANIA

are you texting in Greek or Gringlish? I just tried Kokkino Horio, then Kalyves, then Vamos and on each occasion was told the perferia was not recognised. Perhaps Xania is the only one in this area?

I texted in Greek (capitals).

I just tried ΚΑΛΥΒΕΣ - doesn't work.

But 'ΒΑΜΟΣ' does - gives Silkoil, Vamos and EKO-ELDA Plaka.

Thanks Carol. Haven't got to grips with using Greek yet! One final query, is it just petrol or do you get diesel prices as well? Bob.

It's just the prices for unleaded petrol, Bob.
