The following are all for a four month period:

If you have a normal meter you pay a fixed charge of €1.52 for a single phase supply or €4.80 for a three phase supply. If you change to a dual meter, i.e. different day and night rates those standing charges are increased by €2.00.

The charge for daytime electricity depends on how much you consume. Up to 2,000 kWh it is 0.09460 €/kWh. Above 2,000 kWh it is 0.10252 €/kWh. If you have a dual meter the night rate is 0.06610 €/kWh. If you do things like running dishwashers/washing machines at night I find a bit less than one third of my total consumption is at night. Note also that if you are above 2,000 kWh with a single meter subtracting the night consumption with a dual meter might lose you that part charged at a higher rate.

Not that it only affects the standing charge and the consumption charge so all other charges stay the same. Roughly they might be about half the total electricity charge.

"Nightrate" upto end October (11 pm till 7 am) and thereafter also "nightrate" for a couple of hours in the afternoon (3.30 till 5.30) and from 2.am till 8.am. We have about 40% at nightrate.

Thanks Kilkis, so I take it that the standing charge / fixed charge is daily which would mean over a 4 month period the increase on single phase would be 0.48 x 89 = €42.72 (increase from €1.52 to €2 is .48c x 356/4)

So basically I have to make €10/month in savings to break even?

No. The fixed charges are for a 4 month period. As an example on my last bill I had used 667 kWh at daytime rate and 200 kWh at night-time rate. Thus the charge for electricity consumption was:

    Standing charge = €4.80
    Day 667x0.0946 = €63.10
    Standing charge = €2.00
    Night 200x0.0661 = €13.22
    Total charge = €83.12

If I did not have a dual meter the charge for electricity consumption would have been:

    Standing charge = €4.80
    Day 867x0.0946 = €82.02
    Total charge = €86.82

Thus the saving is €3.70 or about 4.26 %. As a percentage of total electricity charge the saving is smaller. On my bill there was an additional charge of €48.93 for various things like the grid, distribution charges green charges etc so my total electricity charge was €132. Thus the €3.70 saving is only about 2.8 %. Obviously the more electricity you use and the more you can manage to divert to night-time the bigger the saving. Although the saving is small, when I had my dual meter fitted the cost was only about €15 so I made back that cost in about 1 year.

I also get a discount of 15 % of the total consumption charge for prompt payment, i.e. €12.47 on the next intermediate bill so overall I paid €70.65.
