21 February 2007 is the 100th anniversary of the wreck of the Austro
Hungarian Steam Ship "Imperatrix" which sank off the coast of Elaphonissi with the loss of 40 lives in 1907.

Details of the wreck are available at:

www.imperatrix.co.uk

As far as I can make out there is currently no monument, on the island or elsewhere, either to those who lost their lives or to their Cretan rescuers.

An interesting read Mick. What struck me, apart from the sad loss of lives, is that it was a "15 hour journey (to Elaphonissi) on horseback from Canea over roads covered with snow." How really isolated parts of Crete used to be.

A bit of additional information;

On 1 Sept 2006 a small wooden boat with an estimated 120 illegal immigrants got wrecked about 100 metres from the point at which the Imperatrix went down. At least one person drowned.
