Earthquake

Postby Carolina » Sun Jan 06, 2008 11:40 am

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.5 was felt at all over Greece at 7.15am this morning. The epicentre was in the southeast Peloponnese but due it's depth of more than 70km caused little damage. Here in Western Crete the quake was strongly felt, but some of us slept through it!

It woke me up. And my cat demanded to be let out of the house half an hour before it happened.

Nahhhh can't be true
7:15 on a Sunday morning doesn't exist
True there are always those who say they have seen it just like there are those who say they have been abducted by aliens.
But I've been around for cough cough cough years and never seen it yet

I happened to be still in bed but just awake. I wouldn't say it was "strongly felt". I could only just detect the movement. I also heard a slight rattle from something, I'm not sure what, possibly a radiator surround. If I hadn't experienced a strong earthquake previously I am not sure I would have noticed it at all. It certainly wouldn't have woken me up if I had been asleep.

Our bed was shaking and windows rattling like mad, according to Kosta who thought the glass was going to shatter. It woke him up, but not me!
Maybe Akrotiri rocked more as it's out on a limb ?!

I can't report much from Athens. My wife woke me up to say we were having an earthquake and I did all the things practiced for the big one. ie rolled over and went back to sleep.

Carolina, maybe you should have your signature as "Akrotiri rocks!" :)

I heard about the quake -it was reported here - and I'm glad no-one was seriously affected.
