I think this can be summarised as a year's extension to the deadline for mandatory replacement of "old technology" cars, whatever that means. The definition seems to be based purely on date first registered.

Cars first registered before 31/12/2001 must be replaced before 20/12/2015. Last year the deadline applied to cars registered before 31/12/2000.

So, it's not really an extension at all is it? I'll say now, I know nothing about this at all. Just reading the link............

There are also a number of changes to the need to submit an E9 property declaration within certain time limits if you buy, sell or transfer property. If this is you, I would suggest consulting your accountant quite soon.

If this means that a car registered before 31/12/2001 is illegal how comes that I can pay my car tax, pass KTEO and insure it?

Good point! As I said in my previous post,I know nothing about this really, but it seems odd. There must be some sort of other conditions. Maybe the clue is in the reference to "old technology". Perhaps it is cars before that date that don't have catalytic converters or something of that ilk?

I think you are correct Andrew. All I know is that a friend replaced his taxi last year for a new model. The old one was brand new in the late 1990's. (We were there when he took delivery of it, and in those days Mercedes instruction booklets were in just about every language than Greek, so we spent a day reading the English version and helping him with it!). He intends to retire in two years time and the old taxi is still working. We asked him why he had bought a new one and he explained that it needed to be changed because of the taxation due to the emissions. We were not sure if this was a 'taxi' issue....or a general one with all automobiles. - Maybe it is all cars/vans/lorries?

Certainly the road tax on new cars (the scale relates to omissions) is certainly MUCH less, at the lower end, than the "old" system. We got rid of our 4x4 last year and bought a new, slightly smaller, estate car. Total tax saving, road tax & "luxury" car tax combined is around €900 a year.
