My journey to Lesbos to volunteer to aid Refugees

Postby Stavros » Wed Nov 04, 2015 11:43 am

Posting on behalf of our friend Nili Lowicz-Darby:

Dear Friend,

Lesbos is a Greek island and one of the closest to Turkey. It is from Lesbos that most of the refugees arrive to Greece. In the next week I will be travelling to Lesbos to volunteer in whatever capacity, to help with the arriving refugees mainly from Syria.

Being so close to the unfolding tragedy, here in Crete and not doing anything is not an option - there is a moral imperative to being in action as the situation is worsening day by day. Winter is closing in. An unimaginable 110,000 people, people like you and me and children just like ours, made the crossing from Turkey to the shores of Lesbos just last month, a large number drowning in the process, and then walked 60 kilometers in sodden clothes to be registered as refugees, before being given the most basic shelter and assistance. Something is very wrong.

I am also raising money to buy basic items of survival that can make a huge difference. A clean, dry pair of track suit bottoms can prevent hypothermia. A blanket can save a child's life. A crowd-funding Money Raising initiative will be up and running in the next day or two. Please visit my page and give generously, every penny raised will be spent on necessities.

Thank you very much,
