DIY shops

Does anybody kows about DYIshops like B&Qin East part of crete.any help please

I haven't yet encountered a DIY shed like B&Q anywhere in Crete. A few pretty comprehensive tool/hardware shops but not much else.

Praktika close to Heraklion Airport is the nearest thing I have found to B&Q.
Still 2nd division compared to B&Q, but certainly better than anything I have found at Chania or Rethymno

And I always thought not much of B&Q............and I worked for one of their major competitors, realising, at the time that their offering was better than ours.

I don`t know about the east but Skitakis in Chania is by far the best in this region off Apokorono st.

Shop around the prodessional shops and small businesses. Praktiker is over priced and bargains hard on returns. Shop local and you'll be alright.

If you go to Sitia - the big car park next to The Bank of Cyprus - with your back to the bank walk across to the opposite side of the car park there is a road with a motorcycle shop on the left and a hardware shop, with ladders etc on the right. This is run by 2 young lads who speak English and are very helpful and friendly. DIY shops, as we understand them in UK do not exist but this shop is the best in my opinion because the owners will talk and explain and help in any way.

That's another thing that makes Crete so much better than the UK the total lack of B&Q.
Let me add that the shop that fuzer recomends is great ,and if they dont have what you want the shop next door (owned by another part of the same family )will....Jeff

I'm with Jeff on this one. I much prefer the family run shops where people generally know what they're selling, willingly give good advice and are generally helpful. "We don't sell those but I try to get one for you," is infinitely preferable to, "We don't sell those, mate. There's no call for them," attitude of the 'sheds' [and so many other British businesses].

What a diffrence it would make to some of the stupid prices here on

B & Q used to be one of my favourite shops until I started to shop for similar stuff here. I discovered that like-for-like, B&Q tends to be overpriced. Like Praktiker, it can be problematic about returns, and like Alex Pak, it often sells sub-standard stuff among the brands.

I have only once been let down by a family business here and I will avoid that business if I can. The small family run businesses win every time for me. Likewise the small local shops, butchers, greengrocers and the market beat the supermarkets every time on both quality and price.

One of the reasons I came here was to shop local - it works for me - and my diet is much improved. (Don't know what that has to do with B&Q, but it sure has to do with not shopping in TESCO's)
