buying stuff for house rebuild

Postby border collie mad » Mon May 06, 2019 8:16 am

is there anywhere (Area) where the suppliers are ?......say industrial estates Chania, Rethomo would be great for me.....
as much as I'd like to use a mum + dad type shops don't have time......
I'll be needing 10-20 doors and frames, tiles by the van load, swimming pool pumps and equipment, plumbing + elec stuff + wire by the mile...
have always bought in bulk for large projects.....
will be using local labour tho.....
just want to order and pay, then get items delivered in one hit...not tour the island looking for stuff...

after a long search have found a heavy steel supplier, did ask years ago......

is there and industrial electronic type business directory for Crete or Greece in general....
would like to spend my money in Crete, but keep getting told that odd ball items have to come from Athens....
thanks Clogs.

I don't know of a central place/area but perhaps others on this Forum can point you in the right direction. When we built four years ago we used a local carpenter for doors, cupboards, wardrobes, shelves and table but some of the wood had to be imported from the mainland. When we chose our triple glazed windows and doors from a local supplier, these too had to come from the mainland. For other items, like floor tiles, we visited many showrooms in the Xania area, etc. etc. It was fun AND exhausting, so if there isn't a central area/business for housebuild material, then there is a business opportunity!

Hi Clogs ...I'm right down the East end , and there is not really any big suppliers down here , I don't know about the West end .and yeah most raw materials steel , timber , etc tend to come from Athens . and merchants don't like to have tons of stuff in stock costing money ... It has changed when I first started on this house trying to buy plaster board was impossible ...( I tracked some down to find a pile or various thickness that looked like it had been left out all winter.).Not much gets made here ...There are plastic manufacturers on Crete ,tanks ,pipes etc but mainly for the agricultural market , and there are building block factories ,cement works , and quarries , marble ,stone , for floors and worktops etc...this might help you ....

I am afraid you are not going to find the equivalent of a Mr. Bricolage or Bricomarché on Crete. There is a Praktiker in Heraklion which might help but otherwise you are simply going to have to find individual merchants that have what you want.

Kafkas is good for all electrical supplies and will get stuff for you very quickly. It serves both trade and retail, although you need a business ΑΦΜ to get trade prices. They have stores in Chania and Rethymnon. Click on ΚΑΤΑΣΤΗΜΑΤΑ at the bottom of the page to find locations. In the Chania area I am told that Terzis is pretty good for bathroom/kitchen/tile supplies etc. Panagiotakis is a pretty big timber merchant not far from Terzis on the opposite side of the national highway. Both are not far from the junction of the National Highway with the Omalos road. If you go out on the Omalos road for a few km there is a big plumbing store selling all the basic plumbing requirements, e.g. pipework, fittings etc, on the right hand side. You can't miss it - lots of pipework and black tanks outside. Also if you go into Chania on the Omalos road shortly after it meets the Chania - Kissamos old road there is a big metal supplier, Gavrilakis next to Voi Noi shoe shop, and another, Sidal, about 0.5 km further into Chania, both on the right hand side.

In Rethymnon area there is Complete Stores just outside Tsesmes on the Adele road, who stock cabling and electronic fittings as well as plumbing equipment and bulk building materials. Delivery no problem.

For doors/frames made to order I would suggest Christoforakis who are a wood working joinery firm on the right of the main highway, past Lidl. as you go towards Chania. There is a filling station and the turn off is almost immediately after it down to their premises on the left. They made a long and substantial balcony rail for me a year ago which was reasonable in price and very well made. Delivery cost 10€. They also make kitchens and wardrobes etc as well as keeping a vast range of fittings to buy off the shelf.

Good luck

I'd forgotten about Gallios, Kathleen. They are pretty big. I've bought paint from there, when I wanted a particular make and colour and the store in Chania that it was originally bought from had closed down. Google Earth 35°21'40.37"N 24°32'41.01"E Certainly worth a look if Clogs is closer to Rethymnon than Chania.

There are plenty of building type merchants that supply base stuff and specialist suppliers for each type of activity in Rethymnon , just doing myself as well additionally a bit down the road but they do deliver is Practika in Heraklion near the Airport . It much more B&Q like , some prices are B&Q like but other stuff is on the money and easy to see . Bought internal doors and other stuff from there and was reasonable money same with the tiles .

Hi
We are in the South East of Crete our nearest city is Sitia but we can also get to Ierapatra. We are needing internal doors at a reasonable price. We have seen the doors at Praktiker but are unsure if they include the frames. We don't want to travel so far if it doesn't. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why not give them a call and get the info straight from the horses mouth? https://www.praktiker.gr/Store-Heraklion

Praktiker are very good about responding to enquiries. A few years ago we bought lots of metal rackng from them for storage in our basement and they were brilliant responding to all of our questions. They delivered promptly to us too.

I just had a look on the website .. I'm thinking of replacing a solid exterior double door with a glazed one, I don't know weather to make one or buy one... It looks like the doors do indeed include the frame ..but the information on profile and dimensions is a bit thin best to ring up or go see...
