Earth tremor Sitia, 27.08.17

Postby raw » Sun Aug 27, 2017 9:10 pm

Second one we have experienced in 7 weeks of being here, any reports from anywhere else?
This was time it was certainly stronger than the previous one, our Greek neighbour was somewhat concerned!

The only one I can find any reference to was two days ago. It was only 4.1 magnitude and in the sea well south of Crete almost due south of Heraklion. I'm surprised you even noticed it in Sitia. The more the merrier I say. Lots of small ones means less chance of a big one. If earthquakes worry you I would suggest not choosing to live close to a fault line? The whole Aegean area is a mass of them.

Seems to be the same 'quake as Warwick referred to, not the one from last night as shown in altohb's link.

The one in the Newsbomb link was only 3.3 so not really anything to get worked up about. Many years ago I was in a 6.4 quake in Japan and that was certainly "noticeable" especially as it was the first one I had ever experienced. I was inside a very large RF anechoic screened chamber with 12' foam pyramids on the walls. It sounded like someone was banging on the outside of the chamber with a sledge hammer and the foam pyramids were waving like palm trees in a hurricane.

PS Mouche's link is simply one level higher than mine in the site map. The most recent earthquake logged on that has an orange marker to the south of Crete and next to the map there is a list of quakes with their markers. The orange marker appears as "2 days ago" and Pyrgos. If you click on the words "2 days" you get the page that I linked.

Yes, I can remember that one too. Certainly the biggest I have experienced in Greece but I didn't realise it was around 6.4. It seemed to last for a particularly long time compared to most of the ones that I have experienced here. The movement was mostly lateral near Chania. I was sat on a couch and I was thrown from side to side. About the same experience as strongish turbulence on a plane. I would guess that I must have been closer to the epicentre of the one in Japan, because that one certainly felt much worse, or perhaps it just impressed me more because it was the first one I had experienced and the visible effects because of my location.

In the 30 odd years I have been here in Chania, this was the one I felt the worse - January 2006
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Greece_earthquake

It was a Sunday lunchtime, and happened to be the day I was moving house. Myself & friends & neighbours ran outside as the rumble started, the ground in the yard was swaying so strongly from side to side. We clung to one another in a circle and it was all we could do to stay on out feet and to stop ourselves falling over. It seemed to go on forever but was probably only about 40 seconds. Never experienced one so strong before or since. My husband and son were in a lorry travelling on the road moving our furniture, and felt nothing!

'Er Indoors remembers that as quite scary but I didn't notice a thing. I was up an olive tree pruning when it struck and the tree was wafting about anyway without help from the ground being shaken.

A pretty common reaction but against advice in Japan. Most people are killed and injured by objects falling off buildings as they exit. All the Japanese engineers I was working with ran to the door but stayed just inside. They claimed that the door frame was the strongest part of the building and so likely to survive a collapse in a worst case scenario. They also said it is where rescuers would start searching. Nobody bothered to say anything to me and the five other UK engineers I was with as they ran out so we just stood in the chamber looking round in awe and wondering what was happening.

Well, we ran outside and so did the people woring in the taverna. Might add that it was only one floor! Actually at one of the beaches in the Kalyves area! Going back to the house we stopped at Inka in Kalyves and the whole place was a total mess with detergent, honey and wine in a good mix all over the floor!

I guess an 'H' missing from mouche's post - makes for an interesting mental picture!

I can agree that a "k" is missing. To my knowledge the activity you have in mind is normally not conducted in that shop, but then again, who knows! Or maybe you do?
