Postby filippos » Wed Nov 15, 2017 10:26 pm

Have just seen this in the Guardian about flash floods with at least 14 dead reported and many injured.
And in ekathimerini

While I wouldn't say that it happens every year it is pretty common for this type of flooding to happen somewhere in Athens around this time of year. The rain seems to come in heavy storms which often deposit excessively high volumes of rainfall in relatively small areas in a very short time. When it happens in a hilly area with high urban density the water gets further concentrated rushing through the streets. Having said that, this event does seem particularly extreme. Fortunately we seem to be avoiding the worst weather so far.

In 1977 thirteen people died in the centre of Athens in a flood. The rain was very localised this time. - Not a drop fell in the city centre, although it has now been pouring with rain for almost two days. It is just like a tropical storm, according to a friend who lives there.
