Windows: The Cretan Operating System
There’s an old Cretan saying, it seems, which says “The only good window is a closed window.”
On Crete, windows are regarded as beautiful if they are small, and they are seen as perfect when
they’re invisibly hidden behind shutters. You'll find the evidence in the images below.
Foreigners often believe that windows are made for letting as much light in as possible, but that’s
an erroneous notion. On Crete, windows are simply made for letting bad air out, which only takes
a few minutes. For the rest of the day, windows and shutters help to keep the heat out during
summer, the cold in winter, and storms at all times.
