The place to be on a Saturday, especially in the morning, is the open-air market in Chania.
It is the traditional Cretan version of a large shopping mall, only much more human, more
honest and comfortable and Fun … not to mention way cheaper.
Strolling through the aisles you meet friends and acquaintances, pick up a little refreshment
here or there, get invited sometimes to taste a slice of delightful Graviera cheese or a few
cherries
The market caters to almost everyone, and you’ll find the sweetest honey right next to
biologically grown veggies, beautiful Salmon for all Sushi lovers, fresh eggs and great Feta,
all sorts of vegetables and fruit.
In a different section of the market throngs gather around tables with shoes from two Euro
upwards, T-shirts and other garments that can end up in your bag for just a single Euro.
They must be from China, I guess, and it’s utterly amazing that they’ve traveled that distance
to arrive here on Crete.
Even more amazing … the people … true anthropology if you take the time to watch.
